xps 2720 nvidia geforce GT 750M driver disappeared in windows 8.1

i have 3 2720's where the nvidia graphics card's driver disappeared

all machines have windows 8.1 installed and i think it's happened during windows was updating but have no idea which update is responsible, this has not happened with most machines

The intel 4600 driver still shows but the nvidia has completely disappeared and is not even showing as a malfunctioning driver

the driver did install initially and the geforce experience is showing.

all drivers came from the dell website and it was working during the initial install

I know this must be a common issue as i have had it with 3 different machines so someone should know a way round it. my suspison is that a windows update killed it due to a compatibility issue but i do not know which it would be.

many thanks in advance

Hi,

The easiest way around this is by running a System Restore. Has that been tried?

You can also try installing the driver again and check if it gets populated in the Device Manager

Thanks and Regards,

RE: xps 2720 nvidia geforce GT 750M driver disappeared in windows 8.1

Thanks Prajwal

I did the system restore however the system then became unstable so i had to reinstall. On reinstall the nvidia driver was not detected at all however i have run GPU tests with furmark and can not see that it is affecting anything.

How would a user spot if the nvidia driver wasn't there? as in is there an application i could run that wouldn 't work on the intel driver but will on the nvidia. I'm struggling to see what the benefit of the nvidia driver is.

RE: xps 2720 nvidia geforce GT 750M driver disappeared in windows 8.1

There are other workarounds for Windows 8.1

Order of installation is very important.

Remove Intel GPU driver first. Remove, then reboot.

Remove NVidia driver second. Remove, then reboot.

At this time you should have both old drivers installed by Windows.

Next.

Download the most current INTEL GPU driver for your system directly from INTEL not Dell.

Download the most current NVIDIA Driver from NVIDIA not Dell.

Use the Intel install program to update your current Intel GPU device driver following prompts. Use clean install or remove driver as your first option. Then install.

Reboot system

Install NVIDIA driver by following all the prompts. Use clean install or remove driver as your first option. Then install.

Reboot system

You will be able to select your default GPU from the NVIDIA Control Panel Manager.

I leave mine set for NVIDIA as default.

RE: xps 2720 nvidia geforce GT 750M driver disappeared in windows 8.1

I know this is an older thread, but my 2720 is continuing to have the same problem.  When the Nvidia chip is no longer seen in Device Manger, the drivers won't work or install.  You may still be able to see it if you look at the Device Manger Hidden devices.

The motherboard has now been replaced twice.  The first time, the system worked for a couple of months but quit again.  The second motherboard replacement made no difference in the operation of the Nvidia chip, still not recognized by the system..

My system is being sent back for repair.  Maybe something will come from that, but generally I feel it is a system problem.  Since the second motherboard did not help, if you assume that motherboard was good, the problem would seem to be somewhere else on the system, maybe a power supply issue.

RE: xps 2720 nvidia geforce GT 750M driver disappeared in windows 8.1

I had the same issue reported. One day my Nvidia GT750M was working, left my computer on and next day I saw just the Intel Video card. I even booted up a Ubuntu on a USB drive and it too wasn't able to see the NVidia GPU. It's like it never existed. No mention of failure in my Win10 Event Viewer logs or anything. Strange... Anyone got any suggestions other then reinstalling as I am 99.99% sure that will not work. I even tried to upgrade my XPS 2710 BIOS and still nothing.

I never found out exactly what was going on but the system was replaced and this one seems to work normally.  I suppose you can draw whatever conclusions you feel appropriate from the system needing to be completely replaced.

But I have only had this one for 3 months and it seems the prior system took 6 to 8 months before the problem showed up originally.  The new system came with the Nvidia chip being set as primary so the Auto GPU option was not enabled and I have left it in that configuration.

If it is in warranty you can go through that process.  Since they have had prior experience they may know what is happening.  If it is not in warranty you may check on what it would cost to trade in your current system if you really need the Nvidia chip.
