First you should check in the system setup, to see which BIOS version is already installed, to enter the setup, click F2 on startup.

The latest BIOS version is A07, with BIOS version A04, support for newer processors was added.

You can find BIOS version A07, together with the installation instructions here:

Read the instructions carefully, as a failed, or corrupt BIOS update, can cost you a new motherboard.

You don't need a different BIOS update, for Win 7.

Did you install the processor and the memory at the same time?

Also, check the colour of the power button LED, is it solid, or blinking and the sequence of the four 1-2-3-4 Diagnostic Lights located on the front panel.

And the four Diagnostic lights on the front panel are....?

A solid amber power LED could indicate a possible memory issue, first try the following to see if they make a difference.

Quote:

A device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.

Remove and then reinstall the memory modules (see page 74).

Remove and then reinstall any cards (see page 76).

Remove and then reinstall the graphics card, if applicable (see page 76).

BIOS UPDATE is not optional. MUST BE DONE BEFORE CHANGING CPU.

The bios will require the copper heatsink or it will shut down solid amber almost immediately. Either processor works when all of the required steps have been done.

XPS400 Dimension 9150  DXP051

Pentium D 960 requires:

1. Latest Bios

2. Performance Copper heatsink as it uses 130W

3. DDR2 5300/6400 Ram, Low Density, Non ECC, Non Buffered.

http://ark.intel.com/products/27522/Intel-Pentium-D-Processor-960-4M-Cache-3_60-GHz-800-MHz-FSB

Both versions of Pentium D 960 (SL9K7 - D0 - 95W) or (SL9AP - C1 - 130W) will need DELL

1 X9694 Assembly, Heatsink, Performance Shroud, Tank

1. I also recommend Arctic Silver 5 (Thermal Paste).

thanks for the help everyone. question, if i bought the SL9AP - C1 - 130W instead of the SL9K7 - D0 - 95W 960 processor woukd that be the cause of my problem?

awesome, thanks and i'll give it a try!

what you are also saying is that the heatsink that came with my computer is not sufficient? if so i will irder the one you recommended.

i did repkace the cmos battery a week ago as well. maybe that did something to my bios. i just thought when i pressed F2 and it showed that i had the latest bios that everything was fine.  i will reaearch how to update the bios and make sure i do it correctly. thanks again.

what also concermed me was that when i went to the dell website to update my bios it said it was for windows xp and i am running windows 7 pro 64 bit. guess that ill update regardless after i get off work or in the morning. thx

This makes no difference.

The BIOS updates are independent of which version of windows that is installed.

Version A07 is the latest BIOS version and this was released in 1.16.2006.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/xps-400

Windows 7 64 bit is not a supported OS.

X64 versions of windows will not allow it to run.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/xps-400?driverId=R144761&osCode=W732&fileId=2731116924&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI

Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)

NOTE:You will need to provide a bootable DOS diskette. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

  1. Copy the file XP051A07.EXE to a bootable floppy.
  2. Boot from the floppy to the DOS prompt.
  3. Run the file by typing B:\XP051A07.EXE (where B is the drive letter where the executable is located).
