Amber Light on motherboard . XPS Studio 7100 win7

Does anyone know if a solid Amber light on a Dell XPS Studio 7100 Motherboard is normal or do i have a problem? All of my past computers had a green light. This Amber light is throwing me off especially since I just started having issues with the Desktop this week.

Thanks

Hi DjTrex,

It's normal. What's the problem?

Hi DjTrex,

Amber light is normal on the system board. Please elaborate the issue you are facing with the system. You may run hardware diagnostics to check for hardware functionality. Please follow the steps below:

  • Turn on or restart the computer.
  • When the Dell logo appears, press immediately.
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press .
  • When the Dell Diagnostics main menu appears, select ‘Express Test’.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

I also have a few Windows system32 items that the Hijackthis analyzer says are not running from the system32 folder. Is that an issue? and a bunch that say missing file.

Errors after doing the Express Test

Error Code 0F00:133C.

Msg: DISK No suitable disk media present

Error Code 0F00:133C.

Msg: DISK No suitable disk media present

Error Code 0f00:065D

Msg:DISK - DST self test read error

Error code 3700:011B

Msg: REAR_FAN - The fan speed is incorrect

There was also a Fan speed error on the CPU but that was expected since i have an external liquid cooling system for it.

THe symptoms i'm having is computer blackouts and freezing. I have restarted in Safe Mode and done some scans with Microsoft Sec Essentials and Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes. The initial scan found 4 items (serious trojan...) and i removed them. After those quick scans i have tried several times in Safe mode and full working mode to do FULL scans and every time they either lock up after 15-20 min or if i leave them over night, I wake up to a black screen that will not wake up. I am forced to hard shut down them restart. I seem to be able to use MS office products and Photoshop ok but when I try to use Firefox 21.0 and/or IE 10.0.92 I have serious lag and lockups. I keep getting Script errors mostly on Firefox. See below

Script: asset3.cbsistatic.com/.../oreo.moo.rb.combined.js:5

Script: konac.kontera.com/.../KonaFlashBase.js:244

Script: Chrome://browser/content/browser.js9910

Script: i.po.st/.../post-widget.js

I did a Java update on 3/9/13 with no issues.

The same day i was looking for a resolution to a networking problem and did 2 reg changes. Most of the problems started after this. But not until the first part of this month June so i really can't say that there is a definite link.

3/9/13 added 2 Reg changes. file MpsSvc.reg and BFE.Reg from superuser.com for problem with sharing folders ---> link superuser.com/.../cant-share-folders-there-are-no-more-endpoints-available-from-the-endpoint-m

On 4/26 I added Seagate Dashboard for backup

on 6/2 I removed Gbridge because after the REG changes i was not able to use it. I re-installed it and it seems to be working.

On 6/8 I did a Java 7.21 update

On 6/12 I did a flah Player 11.7 update.

My latest quick scans show nothing but a cookie here and there.

I did notice that when i was having the majority of my issues my HDD's were very hot. I have since added a small external fan to keep them cool. They are only warm to the touch now.

I did do a Hijackthis scan but when i try to click (Analyze) it says that there is no internet connection. When i go to a website spyandseek to use their analyzer it says no internet connection. I know i'm connected because i can login to my bank account with no problem.

PLZ help!

I suggest using an offline antimalware scanner like Windows Defender Offline to scan your hard drive for rootkits.

Download it to a clean computer, burn it to DVD; afterwards, boot the XPS 7100 from it and run the scan.

Hi DjTrex,

You've got two hardware issues and possibly more. The freezes and blackouts might be the fan problem, so I suggest you look into replacing your case fan immediately.

You may also have a problem with your hard drive, indicated by error 0f00:065D. You should back up your important data immediately and look into replacing that drive.

Hi DjTrex,

It seems the system HDD is failing. I would suggest you to back up all the data and replace the HDD.

If the system is not covered under warranty and you are residing in the US, you can contact dell spares at 1-800-372-3355 or you can get it from a local store.

Thanks guys, I did run the Windows Defender. It did find some things but they were items that i have had for a long time that always get flagged for various reasons. I did quarantine them. I'm still getting a clean reading from MSE, Malwarebytes,Ad-aware when doing the quick scan. The full scans are still leaving me with a frozen comp when i wake up after letting it run over night.

As for the HDD, I have heard odd noises coming from the box and assumed it was the HDD but was not sure. If I replace the HDD I would like to upgrade to a Solid state drive. Any idea what minimum size i need to run Win7 (64)? I have 2 HDD's now and run OS on one and the files are saved on another. How do i know which one is the problem?

The Case fan issue i believe could be from the fact that I have a Corsair external CPU fan mounted to the outside of the box and it covers half of the box fan. I keep the box access panel off to help with the cooling. I also have a 6" wall fan that i have blowing directly onto the HDD's.

Hi DjTrex,

The minimum capacity of SSD required is 32 GB to install operating system on it. You may take out both the hard drives out of the system one by one and check which one of them is needed to be replaced. Please refer to the Owner’s Manual from the link: http://bit.ly/14Bdjto.

Please feel free to reply. I will be glad to assist further.

Update: HDD finally failed before i could backup my Outlook file and my Firefox bookmarks.

I purchased a Samsung 120GB SSD and a new Case. I decided to purchase a new case because the Dell case only has one fan and i think the reason the HDD failed was due to over heating. I found that the HDD's were very HOT when trying to troubleshoot my computer issues before the drive failed. They were almost too hot to touch.

1) I was reading on a website that with a SSD i need to set the drive to ACHI in the BIOS. I could not figure out how to do that so i just installed  the OS as is. Is that going to be a problem?

2) Do any of you know of a way to recover any of the info (Outlook file) or (Firefox bookmarks) from the dead drive?

The case i purchased is a Coolmaster HAF XM. Tonight i realized that my secondary HDD was not connected to a power source. I turned off the system, added a power source and pushed the Power button. Nothing happened. I opened the case and turned the power button wire around thinking maybe i had it backwards. Still nothing. There is power to the computer because i can see the lights on the Mobo. I even switched the powere supply button off and on but still nothing. Does anyone have a diagram of where the power switch, reset, HDDLED, +P LED, -P LED are supposed to be plugged into? I have them plugged into the FP1 slot but im not sure if it matters what pins or not.

I found a diagram that works for the Power switch and other wires. I can't believe that this is not included in the service manual.

Hi DjTrex,

Thank you for the response. The BIOS is set to AHCI by defaults, so you don’t have to worry about that, the system should work fine. You may contact any local technician for data recovery from bad HDD.

Please feel free to reply for any further questions. I will be glad to assist you.

hello first post here

received my new xps8700 yesterday

after plugging it in and firing it up an amber light is on inside the machine

light stays on after powered down , im assuming its mother board like posted above

i pull the power cord hold power button light goes off inside machine

if i dont do that light stays on .. matter a fact light stayed on all night after machine was shut down

called support , they suggest a new machine or new mother board but machine is running perfectly

i was wondering after looking around the internet and finding this topic

if this is a normal thing with the new dells or should i be going on and swapping out

thank you

i looked at my older xps and there is a light on 24/7  its just placed else where

i do believe this light is just representing power to machine
