Dell Dimension 8400 Ram upgrade

So I think I know the answer but I was hoping on finding someone who has been able to do what I want to do. I just received a Dell Dimension 8400 as a gift and have not run it yet (no hard drive for it currently). It has 3 gb ram in it (2x 512mb and 2x 1gb). I have other machines that cannot run a set of memory I bought by accident, and if they will work on this system then I may be able to move the ram in it currently to another machine. I bought 2 x 2gb pc2-4200 (400 mhz) sticks and was wondering if I pulled out the current memory and ran just those 2 sticks - will the board see the 4 gb? (I understand the OS will not use more than 3.5ish GB due to not being able to run a 64 bit OS).

Thank you for the responses ahead of time.

As far as I know the Dimension 8400 does not support 2gb modules, only 1gb modules per slot, maximum 4gb

Hi greywolf79,

Dimension 8400 supports DDR2 non-ECC memory only. Dell has not tested 4 GB (2+2) memory with this system. This computer supports a maximum of 4 GB of memory when you use four 1-GB DIMMs. You may try connecting it. It might work. Please refer to the manual for more information http://bit.ly/1b3T2fZ.

I guess I will be testing it this next week or so. I was expecting both the responses. Now to see if the computer will run the 2gb sticks. I will post back either way.  I still look forward to other posts if someone has experience with this issue.

Ok, so I have no hard drive still to install an OS and fully check out the computer... But I was able to test the RAM. It would not get through the post test with the 2gb sticks. So it is stuck to 4 x 1gb sticks. Alwell. It looks like the ram in it would not have run on my other systems anyway. I know pc2-3200 will not work in either the other systems and this is all 3200 ram from the looks of it.

Gonna just have to sell off the 2 x 2gb sticks somewhere...

I've always had good luck with selling computers/components on eBay.
