Dell Dimension E520 CPU Upgrade

Hi, i'm upgrading my CPU because this one is too slow, and the one I am getting I will be paying 80$ instead of the usual 250$ price. I would love to know if they are compatible with my system. All I know is they have the same socket type (LGA 775). Heres the link to it : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115060CVF

These are my current computer specs : 4GB DDR2 RAM, 1GB GDDR5 128bit AMD video card, 1.86Ghz Intel core 2 duo CPU (Rated at 3.33Ghz), and a 305W power supply.

If I would need to change the power supply, I'd love to know because I have one here that is 750w I could also use. Thanks.

Daren

*P.S : I know i'll have to update my BIOS because I am currently at version 2.2.1, and the latest is 2.2.4 (Or something like that) should I just bring it to somebody to do it for me, or is it easy to update? I don't know where the find them, so if possibly somebody could direct me, I have Pheonix technologies BIOS.

Thank you very much again!

The Core 2 Quad Q9505 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W shown in your link is not compatible with the e520.

All the Socket LGA 775 processors, listed HERE are compatible.

There should be no need to upgrade the  power supply for a processor upgrade.

There is a lot of good information here on this modification http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/2/ including a list of comparable/compatible processors here http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/ . The limiting factors with the E520 would appear to be the FSB (1066) and the fact that the BIOS does not permit overclocking. I copied the list of CPUs from the web page above into Excel and filtered for FSB then compared with a similar list from Intel's Ark website. The only Xeons that have a 1066 FSB and 65nm technology are the Clovertown CPUs (Xeon 53XX series), which also have very low stock clock speeds compared to the Core 2 Duo Quads. So, unless you want to get into BIOS modding, you will only be able to access clock speeds up to 1.87GHz (for the Xeon L5320). It seems to me that the 771 to 775 mod would be a useful way of accessing cheaper quad core CPUs for motherboards that support a 1333 or 1600 FSB and that allow overclocking, neither of which apply to the E520. So, I'll be sticking with my QX6800. You can buy a QX6800 online now for under $USD100 and a Q6700 for under $USD80. Yes, they are more expensive than the Xeons, but you can be sure that they will work in your E520.

Neither a GPU or it's manufacturer makes assumptions about the space available in a customers PC case. GPU cards are manufactured in a variety of height/length combinations so that customers can purchase the card most suited to their situation.  The information supplied by other posters and by myself in this thread, has been to define which GPU cards definitely do fit in the E520, and the ways in which they were made to fit.

"Single/Double Width" is not a descriptor used by any manufacture, retailer or customer that I have ever seen.  The physical dimensions of GPU cards are always described by;

1) the number of slots on the rear of the case they will occupy, Single or Double, analogous to the card's height.
2) the card's length.

This thread is a little bit old now, but you will find that the Q6600 and the Q6700 will both work in the E520. In fact, I have a QX6800 (Intel Core 2 Extreme @ 2.93GHz) installed in my E520 and it works perfectly. I have upgraded the PSU to 650w but that was more on account of the graphics card (Radeon HD7850). I Have 8Gb DDR2RAM installed with Win7 64 bit and an OCZ SSD system drive. The whole rig delivers rock solid reliability and enough power and speed for pretty much anything.

Further to the previous post, the E520 will work with any of the CPUs supported by the Intel P965 Chipset, listed here

Thanks for the update!

being somewhat new to the upgrade scene, is it hard to upgrade the chipset to accommodate more memory?  i've added memory to my machine, but it only recognizes 3 of the 4 Gigs of mem.  obviously, i need to perform this type of upgrade to access the memory.  i thank you in advance for your input.  investigating the cpu upgrades you recommended.

I suggest opening up a new thread for this question.

The E520 uses 64-bit processors, so upgrading to a 64-bit version of Windows is feasible. Windows 7 product keys are interchangeable between 32- and 64-bit, and thus can be reused for that purpose.

It is not a chipset issue, it probably an operating system problem.

When you have a 32-bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.

Any of the Core2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors support EMT64.

As noted in some other replies to this post, the memory issue you are experiencing  is not a limitation of the chipset, it is a limitation of 32 bit operating systems. They will only recognize a little over 3 Gb of RAM. To access the full 4Gb you have installed, you will need to install a 64 bit operating system. As noted elsewhere in this thread, I have 8 Gb of RAM installed in my E520 and Windows 7 64 bit can access all of it. No chipset upgrade required.
