Dell INSPIRON 620s (n series) Core i5 FREEZES AT SPLASH SCREEN (Dell Logo Screen)

Dell INSPIRON 620s (n series) Core i5 FREEZES AT SPLASH SCREEN (Dell Logo Screen)

My 1 year old INSPIRON 620s wont boot up anymore!! :( Dint give me a single problem up till now.

FREEZES AT SPLASH SCREEN (Dell Logo Screen)

Peripherals attached previously when in running condition:

Monitor - Samsung P2370MS (Multi-purpose FULL HD monitor) through HDMI port

Keyboard & Mouse(USB) - DELL

External HDD(USB) - 1TB Seagate

OS - Windows 7 32 Bit

Peripherals attached NOW (i.e. when the problem arised):

Monitor - VGA monitor (not DELL) through VGA cable (not DELL)

Keyboard & Mouse - Not DELL, PS/2 (used SOULCABLE CABLE CONVERTER PS-2/USB 7007 ) The converter is OK as its working fine on other machines.

OS - Same as above

I have tried removing the RAM and re-inserting it, removing the internal HDD cable and putting it back, checked for loose connections. Removed the Keyboard and Mouse and restarted with only the power cable and VGA cable attached. No cd/dvd in the DVD rom. No memory cards inserted in the memory card slot.

Please HELP!!!

Hi phantom9056,

Please let me know the status of the power light on the system tower. Do you hear any beeps when you turn on the system? I will recommnd you to drain the flea power and see if that makes a difference:

  • Disconnect all the external peripherals.
  • Unplug all the cables connected to the system including the monitor's cable and the power cable.
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Connect the power cable and the monitor back and check if the system is working fine.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Thanx vikram,

Done all the above that you mentioned but to no avail :( No there's no BEEP sound whatsoever. It just hangs on to the Splash Screen forever!!!  Changes in BIOS settings are taking effect, like when i change my 1st boot device to HDD or DVD rom or vice versa.

Pressed F12 after pressing the power button and can manually select the boot options...and when i HDD is selected my Windows loads up with no problem. And the system doesnt crash/freeze anywhere, but then again when i restart the computer its back to the splash screen. Moreover i re installed the Operating System but the problem persists!! Every time im trying to boot it gets hung on the Splash Screen (Dell Logo) But works like a charm if manually HDD is selected by pressing F12 when power button is switched on!

Hi phantom9056,

Thank you for the reply. I will recommend you to make hard drive the first boot device in BIOS:

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F2' as soon as the Dell logo appars.
  • Go to 'Boot' tab and make hard drive as '1st Boot Priority'.
  • Press 'F10' to save the changes.
  • Press Esc to exit.

Restart the system and check if it works fine.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi phantom9056,

I appreciate your efforts. Have you connected an external hard drive or printer with your system? If so, disconnected these devices and check if the system works fine.

In case the system works fine after disconnecting the external hard drive/printer, follow the below steps:

  • Go to BIOS and click on 'Advanced'.
  • Go to 'USB Storage Boot function' and change it to 'Disable'.
  • Press 'F10' to save changes.

In case there is no such external deice connected to your system and the issue still persists, you may try to load BIOS defaults:

  • Go to BIOS.
  • Press 'F9' to load defaults.
  • Press 'F10' to save.
  • Exit the BIOS and check if the system works fine.

Keep me posted. please reply for any further questions.

No no external HDDs are attached, and i did change the settings to DEFAULT by pressing on F9 and quitting by F10. But its still the same scenario!!! Ran a DIAGNOSTIC check...the prompt said its all fine. There's no BEEP at all, so everything is fine I suppose, then why am i stuck to this Splash Screen all of a sudden?

in my PC technician days, what i would do is this, what you do is up to you, ground yourself and be careful with 120v

1. use another spare good known HDD and quick format and reload WinXP, Vista, or Win7

1a. open an admin cmd prompt and run "chkdsk /r" on the current HDD

2. remove 1 stick per slot per reboot to "re-seat" the RAM, *removing 1 stick may "fix" the problem

3. its unlikely, but the issue maybe the mother board, inspect for any abnormalities and verify USB ports look normal

4. upgrade BIOS

Hi phantom9056,

Thank you for sharing your system's Service tag through the private message. It appears to be an issue with the motherboard. You can try re-seating CMOS battery on your system, in case you are comfortable reffering to the system manual. In case the issue still persists, you may consider replacing the motherboard. As far as the video issue is concerned, please post a screen shot of the Device manager by expanding ‘Display Adapters’.

Please reply for any further questions.

I had this same problem, but was unable to fix it with the following: removing the battery, reseating RAM, reseating the HDD, upgrading the BIOS, running the F12 diagnostics program, or disabling USB boot options or switching SATA options in the BIOS. The workaround i found to work was to hit the F12 key repeatedly and immediately after powering up, then manually selecting the HDD to boot from. Quite the hassle.

I eventually solved the problem when I realized my HDMI cable was plugged into the motherboard's HDMI port instead of the video card's HDMI port. Once I swapped ports, the system booted normally with no issues.

Hope this helps solve other peoples problems.
