Dell Inspiron 530s dual monitor connection

I have a dell inspiron 530s with 128 mb ati radeon x1300 graphics card. I want to connect two monitors but have not been succesful. Can I just buy a dvi splitter to connect the two monitors or do I have to install a second graphics card and if so what graphics card would fit. I have tried a dvi-i to dvi-d and vga splitter but have been unsuccesful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need either a video card with 2 separate connections or 2 separate cards. You cannot use a splitter for this. Many newer graphics cards have 2 connectors. It might be difficult or impossible to install 2 cards in your slim desktop.

Do you know if external vga/dvi work with this system. I saw one that uses the usb to add either an additional vga or dvi port. Would this work to enable me to have dual monitors?
