Dell OptiPlex 745 black screen after login Windows 8
Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex 745 desktop, and I am trying to run Windows 8 on it. Everything goes fine when booting, but once the user is logging in the screen goes black and goes to sleep after a while. All hard drive activity seems to stop at this point. I tried booting in safe mode and everything worked perfectly. As far as I can tell it's just a graphics driver issue, but when I tried to install latest drivers from Intel's site, it gave me the message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."
Here's some info on the system:
OS: Windows 8.1, 32 bit
Chipset: Intel Q965 (ICH8) Express Chipset

Hi 3picJon,
Dell has not tested the system with Windows 8.1 and the drivers are not available on Dell support website. You may try installing the drivers for Windows Vista x32 in ‘Compatibility Mode’. Please follow the steps below:

Hi, thanks for the suggestion.
Unfortunately, it seems that it did not work. I tried running it in compatibility mode for Vista sp2 and it gave me a message saying "This operating system not supported, setup will now close."
It should be noted that the system works perfectly fine in safe mode, but obviously I can't just leave it in safe mode for eternity. Also, I have another drive with Windows Server 2012 on it, and it runs on the OptiPlex without any problems either, which seems odd since the two systems should be fairly similar.
Would this problem possibly be solved by simply buying a dedicated graphics card for it? Or would it still have issues?

Hi 3picJon,
As I suggested earlier the system is not tested with Windows 8.1 by Dell. It is a probability that the old hardware is not compatible with the operating system.
You may try to install a discrete Video card. However, you may need to upgrade other components like power supply of the system as per the requirement of the Video card. I would also recommend you to install any latest video card.

First of all, I want to confirm that I have a fully functional Dell Optiplex 745 Small Tower Running Windows 8.1 x64 Bit.
My Current Specs:
40 GB IDE Hard Drive (Using IDE to SATA Adapter)
4GB RAM
1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Series
BIOS Revision 2.6.6
What I did:
First of all, I updated the BIOS to the one over here (Revision 2.6.6)

Now, if you're still stuck on Windows 8.1, boot into safe mode, download the BIOS update file, and right click it, click on properties, go to compatibility, select change for all users and select windows vista and run as administrator, save it, then run it and install it. Now I don;t know if the version of windows matters since I have 64 bit, so do a clean re-install and reset the BIOS to the default settings, go into Drives, and select SATA mode to Legacy, it's actually AHCI and it's better than the "normal" default mode. Also enable SMART reporting. Re-install Windows 8.1, then when at the desktop, download the Windows 7 Graphics Driver from:

And now change the compatibility settings to Windows 7 and Run as Administrator.
Install it and reboot, you should now be good to go.

I am running windows 8.1 enterprise in my optiplex 745 with no problem. The bios had already been updated to the 266 version and I do think that the settings in bios for the legecy might make a difference. When installing windows 7 or 8.1, windows will install all of the drivers, other than the video driver. It can be done by windows update.
