Dell studio xps 8100 and gpu upgrade
I too have an XPS 8100 with the following: Full size case, not sff or mff, but park a car in big. i5 650 3.2 ghz, 16 gig of RAM, 1T hd, 128gb ssd, NVIDIA GeForce GT 220, original PSU.
I have realized that I desperately need to go to dual monitors. I spent hours on Dells site trying to find a GPU that is compatible with the 8100 and found cards for the 8300 8500 and the 8700 but not for the 8100.
I ordered the monitors and had to ship them back bc they were not even remotely what I needed. Sales people at Dell aren't good techs.
I'm assuming I need a new GPU and I'm going to be running DVI.
Anyone have a good idea for a dual monitor video card that works on an 8100? Please don't make me call Dell and talk to those yahoos.
Thanks!

No gaming at all. I'm a doctoral student so I don't have time for that. I just need the dual screens for opening up multiple things at once like Word and my university online library for research. I need the ability to have more than one thing open at one time without having to alt-tab all the time. I have two @ work and I love it. I will have things open like multiple tabs of IE and Chrome and Word and things like that.
Thanks!

ok ... did a little searching ... it can be hard to find a graphics card with 2 DVI ports on it ... a lot cards can run 2 DVI monitors but a lot of the time you have to get extra adapters to make the HDMI or Display ports output to DVI.
i found this guy ... it was released around the time of your computer and should work fine ... it wont game well but it can run the heck out of web browsers and office docs ... it's a little overpriced for what it is but i think it's because it has 2 DVI ports.

i just had a second thought too ... if the gt 220 card that came with your system has a HDMI port on it you can get HDMI to DVI adapters ... it should be able to run one monitor off the DVI port and then another with a HDMI to DVI adapter.
