Dimension 8400 cannot boot Windows 7 SATA drive 1TB from another Dell

I pulled a working Windows 7 SATA drive from a Dell Inspiron 570, 1TB in size.

When installed in a Dell 8400, the Windows loading sequence fails.

(No other drives connected)

Bios in the 8400 correctly identifies the drive and diagnostics passed OK.

By this i mean, in the Inspiron, Windows loading I see the spinning wheels, color Screen windows 7 start sequence, then the select user screen.

In the Dimension 8400 I see a black and white lettering, loading windows bar at the bottom of the screen, "Windows is loading files..."

Does this problem look like a Dell Dimension problem, or perhaps a problem with software on the 1TB hard drive.

Now, If I put a PATA drive in the 8400 and reconfigure BIOS, I can boot from a Windows XP drive with no problem.

Thanks for reading.

"....Are you trying to use/boot the Inspiron 570, 1tb HD, in the Dimension 8400, without reinstalling "   windows 7?..."

Yes.

I thought this would be a simple swap.

I do not have the history of the Windows installation, but there is a Windows 7 label and product key on the  Inspiron 570.

I'll try F8 during boot....

Are you trying to use/boot the Inspiron 570, 1tb HD, in the Dimension 8400, without reinstalling windows 7?

If you are, this will no work, the differences between the the systems are too great. You need to clean install Windows 7 and use the appropriate Dimension 8400 drivers, etc.

Was the Windows 7 operating system used in the 570 a Dell OEM copy, factory shipped with the 570?

Bev is correct.

I'm using a D8400 running Win 7, but the only way it's going to work is if you clean install Win 7 on the 8400, using a legal (retail) Win 7 OS disk and valid product key.

And one more thingy... Unless you have the (optional) upgraded CPU in the 8400, you're limited to 32-bit Windows. The 570 can run 64-bit Win 7 and I suspect that's what's on your 1T hard drive...

Seems like I'm going about this the wrong way.

When I saw the size of the CPU cooler in the 8400, I thought it had the better processor. as compared to the Inspiron.   The 8400 is 32 bit, and the windows 7 install on the hard drive is 64 bit.

So, I'm putting the Inspiron back together and calling it a day.

Thanks youall.
