Dimension E520 and Windows 7 64 Bit
Hello
I am new to the desktop forum, I have a dimension E520 currently running XP Pro 3 Gig RAM I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit so I can take advantage of more RAM I have 4 slots and hoping to go to 8 GIG RAM. Have any one tried that and did it work. I know there are different version of the E520 below is some of the data from my WINMSD output
System Model Dell DM061
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~3059 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 2.0.5, 11/30/2006
SMBIOS Version 2.3

The answer may be that You cannot do either.
Your Max Ram is 8gig and your CPU must be 64 bit.
You must have a 64 bit CPU to work with 64 bit Windows.
With an updated bios you may be able to use a 64 Bit smithfield.

it comes with both 32 and 64 bit Windows 7.
Retail Versions of Windows 7 ultimate also come with both 32 and 64 bit media.
If you do not have a 64 bit processor then the 64 bit DVD for XP or VISTA or Windows 7 will not finish booting and have an error about requiring a 64 bit processor.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. Welcome to the forum. We are users helping users here.
The Dell manual lists the different CPU's that the E520's came with however it ONLY has one listing for the memory four 1 GB modules for total of 4GB. However, Crucial, which guarantees their memory will work in Dell's lists four 2GB modules for a total of 8 GB..

Fireberd and Speedstep thank you both for your help and the information shared. I guess it is time to build or buy a new PC with 64 bit processor.

Dell lists Vista 64 bit drivers for your PC so it will run 64 bit OS. I have an E510 which is an earlier model of your E520 and it will run 64 bit OS, although I'm only running Vista 32 bit on it.

I've got the exact same system and am running Windows 7 64 bit no problem. You will need to update the BIOS and the update is on the dell support site.
Once installed I did a "Windows experience index" text and got a rating of 3.6 (which i know isnt great) but the limiting factor was the graphics card (ATI Radeon x600). Individual scores as follows:
Processor: 4.5
RAM: 5.4
Graphics: 3.7
Gaming: 3.6
Hard Drives: 5.9
I plan to upgrade the graphics card to comething newer and see if this makes a difference. Machine is as follows.
OS: Win 7 64 bit (6.1, build 7600)
System model: Dell DM061
Processor: Pentium D, 2.8ghz
Memory: 4096 Mbytes

Hi,
I also have a dimension E520 and am running windows 7 64 bit on it. CPU is Intel pentium D945. Upgraded BIOS to 2.4.0 24/5/07
I want to upgrade my ram to 8gb. I have bought 4 x 2g corsair pc2-5300 DDR2 and have replaced slots 2 and 4 with the 2gb ram and left the original 1gb ram in slots 1 and 3.
The system recognizes the 2gb ram ok but only the one in slot 2. It still says it has 4 gb ram. The BIOS say max ram is 4gb. When I run the Crucial test it says max ram for this machine is 8gb and I'm running 4gb.
Does anyone successfully have 8gb ram running in their E520??

Lesson for me there I guess. I googled and came up with 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 didn't really take in what was said in the manual :S
Since then I have tried many different configurations and have managed to get 7gb installed. I have replaced the 1gb in slots 1, 2 and 3 with the 2gb ones but whenever I try and put the last 2gb in slot 4 the computer starts but doesn't boot. I've tried swapping the rams over in case one was bad but thats not it. I've tried just having 4gb as 2gb each in slots 1 and 2 restarting (which is fine) and then adding the extra 2x2gb in slots 3 and 4 but it wont boot. when I swap the 2gb in slot 4 for 1gb it works ok and recognizes 7gb.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. I have an E520 (Core2, 2.13Ghz) and am now running Windows 7 (64 bit) - I upgraded this week. I also just upgraded my memory to 6GB with two Kingston 2GB modules (KTD-DM8400B/3G) from Newegg. I had a 3GB configuration and kept the 1GB DIMMs in slots 1 & 3. The 2GB DIMMs are now in slots 2&4. The system came up immediately and recognized 6GB. I then increased my pagefile (virtual memory) to 9GB. I stuck with the 667Mhz DIMMs. This system is now flying again.

2gb modules WILL work, i purchased two of them the other day and the work (not completely 'cause i have 32 bit vista, going to upgrade to 7 64 bit) BTW its always safer to purchase DELL RAM and no crucial for dell pc's

I beg to differ. Crucial guarantees their modules will work if you use their selector thing.

I have an E520 running Windows 7 64 bit and 8Gb of RAM (4 X Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5). CPU is an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 and graphics card is an ATI Raedon HD5770. Windows experience index is 7.2. The BIOS is the latest available from Dell (2.4.0). This rig works perfectly and is lightning fast, undoubtedly helped by an OCZ SSD as the system drive. I did need to upgrade the PSU to a 650w Coolermaster unit to run all of this, but believe me, it works. The only thing is, when you install the RAM, be sure to install it one pair at a time; install one pair, boot up, shut down, install second pair, boot up, BINGO.

I want to upgrade mine to at least 6 Gig RAM.
I am using Windows-7 64bit and have four 1-Gig modules installed. I've just ordered two 2-Gig modules and need advice:
Which are the best of the four ports to install two new 2-Gig modules into? Ports 1 & 2 or 1 & 3? I know that the faster speed of the two new modules will have an effect; should they be the primary?
