Dimension e310 Audio Driver Issue

My audio has been Intermittently poor for a year or more (pops and static). I've tried uninstalling the Sigmatel driver and letting Windows reinstall it - doesn't fix it).  I've also searched for audio drivers (using my service Tag) on Dell's support site - coming up with Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Maj HD v.5.100.4823.  The file downloads just find (R114282.exe) but the Sigmatel installer quickly tells me it isn't the correct audio driver for my stystem and stops?!  What's up with that? Any ideas. Thanks in advance

Hi littleneil,

Welcome to the Community.

Please let me know the operating system installed on the system so that I can help you in a better way.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to run diagnostics on the computer which will isolate the issue.

Unplug the power cable. Press and hold power button for 10 seconds. Plugin the power cable and turn on the system. Tap F12 key to access One Time Boot Menu. Highlight Boot to Utility Partition and hit Enter to start the diagnostics.

Use an Air duster inside your case, there might be dust there and could be the sound problem you have.

Hi littleneil,

Thank you for the reply.

I would suggest you to uninstall the audio drivers and restart the system. Please remove the drivers mentioned below which need to be removed from Add/Remove programs option in control panel.

Once the drivers are removed, restart the system. Update the BIOS and install the driver by clicking the link mentioned below:

BIOS: http://dell.to/13SGwRm

NOTE: Ensure that the system does not turn off during the BIOS update.

Restart the system.

Audio driver: http://dell.to/12OFgQ6

Restart the system.

If the issue persists, perform symptom test on sound using Dell PC Diagnostics. Click the link mentioned below to download the application:

As I have indicated in my earlier posts, all of these steps have been taken without favorable results. In addition the audio driver you recommended will not install - saying it is not the correct driver for my system. I think this hopeless and I will try a new sound card in the PC and see if that makes a difference.

I'd suggest upgrading to a newer version of Windows over buying a new sound card, as support for Windows XP is ending next year anyways.

I have a Dimension 3100, which is identical to the E310, and I'll try the feasibility myself.

I installed Windows 8 on the Dimension 3100 and the onboard sound driver was installed automatically. The onboard video isn't recognized, thought, so you'd have to install a video card.

That will work and be a slightly better fit, for an additional $40.

The Startech bracket plus a regular 6450 card is $60.

Windows 8 loads a basic video driver for Intel 82915G, if you use windows Update.

But getting a card is best.

Make sure the card is directX10 Windows 8 is directx10 or 11 cannot remember.

rdunnill can you show pictures of your pcix1 adapter in your Dell dimension 3100.

so far, nothing has been sucessful is stoping my occasional static in the speakers/headphones sound system. I've decided to purchase a sound card and install it. Maybe a new "driver" will reolve the issue. But, where to install it? There are only three expansion spaces and all three are occupied by OEM equipment. One card must be removed to make room for the new sound card, but which one? The top card, I'm pretty sure, is a TV tuner card - which I never use. The middle card has two telephone jacks which I can't explain, The bottom card has two firewire ports which I have no idea about either.  So which expansion card can I safely remove with out affecting my system configuration. Thanks in advance

The card with the telephone jacks is likely a modem for dial-up communications.

If you add a sound card, your front audio port will not work with it and thus neither will headphones plugged into the front audio port.

I'd just like to mention that I have the exact same PC with the same OS and I'm experiencing the exact same problem. I've updated the BIOS and chip support package and still can't get any version of the audio system to work. The audio system worked previously. This may be related to some recent update of  WinXP that caused the audio drivers to stop working.  That's all I can think of.
