You may have corrupted registry for the following reasons.

1 You did not install the chipset drivers BEFORE installing the Audio drivers.
2 You did not login as administrator and the Permissions to registry keys are now Broken.
3 You tried to install several drivers that were wrong and did all of the above.

WINDOWS XP HOME REQUIRES BOOTING SAFE MODE TO LOGIN AS ADMINISTRATOR.

Error 10 sound card wont start Permissions problem

Listed Here in this Word Doc file
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/winxp_driver_data_invalid.doc

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI

The fix is to put the permissions back the way they were (turns out this particular subkey had been modified by mistake anyway). You’ll either need to be a member of the local Administartors group to run this, or schedule it to run under Task Scheduler with admin credentials. You’ll also need the SubInAcl.exe command-line utility.

subinacl /subkeyreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
  /grant=Administrators=F
  /grant=System=F
  /grant=everyone=R

Now Windows will be able to properly enumerate devices and the problem should go away.

Read the KB article 555377 by Microsoft MVP Nick Whittome.

Get SubInAcl.exe from Microsoft.

You have 75 days left on your warranty.  Call support and get them to send you new cd's

If you Renew your warranty before it expires you will be able to extend it for a few more years.

I'm having the same problem, but my OS is Windows Server 2003.

I have enabled the Windows Audio service (which Server 2003 disables upon installation), but the Multimedia Audio Controller (on-board on the Optiplex GX260) wont install.

Is there a different driver for Server 2003?

Just enabling the "service" is not going to EVER get audio going.

You should install Directx 9.0c BEFORE trying to install the driver.

Then you must run DXDIAG and RE-ENABLE directx Acceleration which is ALSO DISABLED BY DEFAULT.

Enabling Directx and Audio service means you are NOT SUPPORTED 100 PERCENT FOREVER by microsoft or Dell.
This is not a supported configuration.

The Security profile for windows 2003 server makes installing dells software IMPOSSIBLE.

Dell usually has a download to C:\DELL\Drivers that launches internet explorer with a
RUN FROM THE CURRENT LOCATION option which would be DISABLED by the security profile.

You should look and understand how to make 2003 a workstation.

Duly noted.

I've done the following:

1.)  Enabled the sound service.

2.)  Uninstalled IE Enhanced Security

3.)  Successfully installed and verified DirectX 9 (with acceleration enabled on all 3 features).

4.)  Checked the rest of that document you pointed to for other issues related to sound and have found none.

Under the DXDiag application, I have no sound card listed.  Also during the installation, the on-board sound card is recognized, but still fails to install.  Am I missing something?

Solved!

That driver mentioned above works just fine once all the other stuff is done.
