GX280 on 755 case?

No.  The two board form factors and cases are entirely different and completely mutually incompatible.

 

IT doesn't use ATX, it uses a Dell format. You may be able to fit another dell tower board into it but thats about it. I think my dimension 2200 was one of the last to fit into an ATX case

Does the GX280 use ATX mobo? I've read somewhere about it and I'm under the impression that it does, but not sure. If it does, then can I just buy an ATX tower from Ebay or something and use it?

PS: Maybe I should explain what I'm trying to do. I'm building a family PC which I'm planning to connect to my 55" LCD TV and my receiver in the living room. This is strictly for internet browsing, pictures, and playing mp3s. No gaming, and I'm not even playing DVD movies on this thing.

Therefore I don't need a fast computer, that's why I thought I'd start with GX280.

The next thing to do is to put a somewhat decent video card and I'm thinking EVGA Geforce 8400GS. 256 MB, PCIe, and it has DVI out and HDTV support. Again, this is just for internet and picture browsing purposes. So am I thinking right here? Would like your opinions please.

 

The thing is, the GX280 case is pretty messed up, so I want to change it to something that looks decent.

GX280 is BTX not some custom Dell format. The older GX280s were regular ATX

 

I don't know if the wiring is incompatible or not (I doubt it) but the motherboard won't fit on a GX620/745/755 case.

 

You need a GX280 BTX case.

 

GX280 BTX mobo and GX620/745/755 mobos have different NIC set ups so it won't match up. Just get the GX280 BTX case.

thats why I thought it would fit.

Yes, that's correct, the GX280 is available in both ATX and BTX. The ATX model is the GX280, and the BTX model is the GX280-05.

 

Easiest way to tell is by the motherboard direction. If the motherboard faces to the left, it's ATX. If it faces to the right, it's BTX. Based on the pics you posted, you havethe ATX GX280.

The newer systems (GX280-05, GX620, 740, 755, etc) they use a different chassis style (that uses a BTX-like motherboard layout), and it's not compatible with your board.

Yes, I think we've established that my GX280 is the older model (ATX) and it wouldn't fit the 755 case (BTX) that I was planning to use.

 

The next question is:  would I be able to just buy an ATX case from Ebay and transfer everything to it without any fitment issues.

No. Dell uses a proprietary motherboard tray and the pin out for the power button, power led, reset button, etc is undocumented. Dell has USB and sound going over the ribbon cable they use, which I've never seen done for retail cases.

There's nothing wrong with my case actually. This computer will sit in my family room, so I thought I'd find something that looks decent. This one is already beat up and missing the grey center cover.

What's wrong with your case and why are you trying to replace it? You might be able to find a case on Ebay. One from a GX150, GX240, GX260, GX270, or GX280 will work. Just make sure that it' the same form factor.
