INstalling Monitor?

Hello, my daughter just got a new computer and gave me her E173fp flat screen monitor to have. I actually have a compaq computer. I thought I would just plug in the monitor but it says no video found. After looking through the Dell sight, it tells me the monitor needs the resolution to be higher. When I go to the control panel on my computer and try to do this, it tells me the monitor on my computer can read this frequency and wont do it. My question is how to get this monitor to work with my computer. Do I need something else? I am running windows xp. Hope someone can help me. thanks

Before you remove the old monitor reset the screen resolution to 800x600 @ 60Hz. This setting is supported by virtually any monitor although you may get a message when you plug in the new one that the settings are not optimal. Once you can see the screen on the new one you can then adjust the settings to suite the monitor.

You will not need to change the refresh rate as 60Hz is all a flat panel needs.
