Inspiron 660 graphics card recommendations

Hello

I'm looking for any recommendations for graphics cards for the Inspiron 660. Preferably what card will just pop straight in and help me to run Battlefield 3.

Thanks,

Ronak

Hi,

The Inspiron 660 has following options available for Graphics Chipset:

  • Integrated Intel HD Graphics chipset.
  • nVIDIA GeForce GT 620 (for slim tower).
  • AMD Radeon HD 7570.
  • NVIDIA GeForce 640GT (for Mini Tower).

The power supply in Inspiron 660 is 300W for mini tower and for slim tower it is 220W.

Following are the graphics card requirement for Battlefield 3:

Minimum: ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, nVidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher.
Recommended:  nVidia GeForce GTX 560 or ATI Radeon 6950.

For the above graphics cards the power supply requirement is greater than the power supply present in the computer. You might have to upgrade the power supply if the graphics card is upgraded.

For any clarifications please feel free to contact me.

Hopefully you have the mini tower because it just won't work with the slim.  Based on the chart below, the GT 640 would be your best bet from what was mentioned.  However, a better card would be the HD 7750.  The others, except for the HD 6670, will not work because they require an additional power cable hook up from your power supply which you do not have.  The HD 7750 does not and uses less power than the HD 6670.

If your resolution is less than 1920 x 1080 as shown, then you will get better frame rates.  I would go with the HD 7750 because it costs no more than the GT 640 and gives you better performance in the game.  The GT 640 barely cuts it at this resolution and is just meeting the minimum requirement.  If the GT 640 will work, then the HD 7750 will work also with your 300 watt power supply.

Hello!!

just wanna ask will the 350 watt PSU fit in my 660s cabinet???

And are you definitely sure HD 7750 will work on 350 watt

The HD 7750 will definitely work with a 350 watt power supply.  It actually uses less power than the HD 6670 which has been used on 300 watt units.

However, I have to question the design of this newer 660s case.  It takes the TFX type power supply and they have always worked on the older Inspirons like the 530, but it had an open back where the power supply is positioned in the case so it really did not matter where the power connector was placed on the PSU.  The 660s seems to be different with a closed back and the power connector is turned lengthwise in a specific cutout.  I see that Dell linked other power supplies which are not the same as what you have and not specific for the 660s so maybe they will work.  Not sure.  I would be confirming by looking at the back of your case.  The video card linked is the same one I mentioned.

Thanks for the response Kelbear1. I do believe I have the mini and not the slim. I will try the Radeon HD7750, wish me luck. I will let you know if it works. It did play Battlrfield 2 right out of the box, but B3 almost, but not quite.

If your intentions are for gaming as discussed in this post, then I would probably recommend the following HERE based on the slim case you have.

I too use inspiron 660s and it has only 220w power supply. But the card you have suggested(SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750) must have a minimum requirement of 400w. But will it suit for my pc(220w)

Hi,

On Inspiron 660s only low profile graphics cards would work. Here is the list of few graphics cards which would work on desktop computer:

  1. nVidia GeForce GTX 620.
  2. nVidia Quadro® NVS 420.
  3. SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6670 1GB.

If video card is upgraded on the computer, then you would need to upgrade the power supply too as the power supply on this computer is 220W.

Please post back with the results.

The HD 7750 does not need a 400 watt power supply.  It will not work with your 220 watt unit, but will work with the PSU upgrade (350w) that I showed along with the card.

Hi,

Inspiron 660s will only work with low profile graphics card and the below mentioned graphics card should work with the computer: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1159&pid=1658&psn=&lid=1&leg=0#

The minimum power supply requirement for the graphics card is 400W. Providing the link, for power supplies which would work with the computer: http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_nkw=400w+Slim+TFX+Power+Supply+

Please post back with the results.
