List of PCI graphics cards which are guaranteed to work with the OptiPlex 170L?

I have an OptiPlex 170L desktop which is almost maxed out, though it doesn't have a PCI GPU. I bought an FX 5500 256 MB card and I found out that it won't work with the 170 due to the voltage being different. Is there a list of graphics cards which are guaranteed to work with this system? Or just say what the best one would be for this system. Thanks!

There is no such List.   HOWEVER there is a spec that is GUARANTEED TO NOT EVER WORK. Thats 5v PCI 2.0 vs UNIVERSAL PCI 2.2

That is 5v only cards with only 1 keyway.  The voltage issue is based on PCI spec 2.0 or 2.1 vs UNIVERSAL 2.2 PCI.  Geforce 5500 is ANCIENT PCI.  You need to look for Conventional PCI 2.2 UNIVERSAL card.   HOWEVER An Optiplex GX620 would be a better investment as its DDR2 and has PCI-E video and can be upgraded with Pentium D 915 cpu allowing it to run MSDOS all the way to windows 10.

You could migrate your hard drive from the 170 to a GX620 and it would work fine.

If you insist on a PCI card I would recommend a

Ouch! That's a steep price. I've told myself that I won't be sinking tons of money into this machine, and $78 is definitely past that line. I'll forget about it I suppose. I wasn't really intending on using this 170L for a whole lot anyways...
