Loading PBR for descriptor 2
I have a dell dimension 5100 desktop that recently started freezing at "Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done" point while booting up. It's been a slow tumble down to this point. It used to give me some BSoDs whenever I left it. Then random processes just stopped (I couldn't see the wireless connection through windows, but I did reinstall the drivers from linksys and used their programs to access the internet until now.) After that, the mouse never appeared after booting once. Then I thought everything had gone back to normal, only to find that there was no sound (opening ASIO 4 All revealed absolutely nothing at all... something I'd never seen before.)
I did manage to get a live CD of Puppylinux working with no problems, so the motherboard and ram seem to be fine, but I somehow managed to access the dell diagnostics once and recieved this error message "Error 2F00:0119 System memory failure location:DIMM_1"
So I guess it must be hard drive (which has never been replaced). I don't really have another computer I can plug the hard drive into, but from Puppy Linux, I was able to mount every partition of the hard drive except the second one (the important one.) I DO have a large external harddrive which I was trying to use to backup everything from puppy linux, but I haven't gotten very far with that. I also ran testdisk on the hard drive, and it froze the entire system while searching deeper into the partition (I was hoping I could save my important files). Telling testdisk to list files gave "File System may be damaged" response.
Is there a way I can retrieve my essay due soon? After that, is my only hope to reset the harddrive to factory standards? I can certainly backup the entire drive to the external hard drive.
Also: between the time I got the computer so many years ago and today, I've misplaced my Windows XP install disc, so I can't access the recovery prompt.

Hello gospex
Error 2F00:0119 System memory failure location:DIMM_1
This is the memory (ram) in the computer, not the hard drive.
You need to fix that before you can fix hard drive.
Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there any hint as to which stick might be bad? Is DIMM_1 a specific slot for ram so that I could simply replace that one?
