No sound - driver not found!

Ive read the other forum posts that have covered this and it does not seem to answer the question.

I have a GX260 with Windows XP Pro all of which was reinstalled using the Dell Recovery disk. However, the only thing is that I did not use the driver CD that comes with the computer, i tried downloading the drivers off the dell website.

I downloaded 2 drivers one is 56339 and another one (which i cant remember, i saw it on a post and i just downloaded it to test but it didnt work). Neither of them worked, and they both gave me a driver not found! Please reboot your system message... (not exactly what it said, but to that degree).

One post descibed uninstalling everything under the video/audio in the hardware devices, however, that does not work because nothing under that heading will uninstall.

One post described downloading new driver -- i believe that was the 56339 driver, which doesnt work.

I tried uninstalling the device, and allowing windows to setup up with their own drivers, none found, also then inputed the driver directory, and it gave me the same error.

The only advice posted that I didnt try, was the reformatting, however, i would like to keep that to an asbolute last resort, as i just did that...

I dont know what else I could try, the computer is stock, the audio card is onboard and is not put in.

Any ideas??

Randomly downloading and installing drivers is NOT recommended and in some cases makes it worse.
You should download XP Service pack2 the full version 270 megs.

Save to a USB Memory key 512meg or larger.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

Then Reinstall XP.

Reboot 3 times.

Then install SP2 logged in as ADMINISTRATOR

Reboot 3 more times

Then install the Audio driver.

It takes a few reboots to Finalze the registry.

replaces it. If you wish the driver to be completely removed from the
system, complete the following steps:

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following from the WINDOWS
directory (WINNT for Windows 2000):

(they will be named OEMn.inf [where n is an integer]).

You may have corrupted registry for the following reasons.

1 You did not install the chipset drivers BEFORE installing the Audio drivers.
2 You did not login as administrator and the Permissions to registry keys are now Broken.
3 You tried to install several drivers that were wrong and did all of the above.

WINDOWS XP HOME REQUIRES BOOTING SAFE MODE TO LOGIN AS ADMINISTRATOR.

Error 10 sound card wont start Permissions problem

Listed Here in this Word Doc file
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/winxp_driver_data_invalid.doc

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI

The fix is to put the permissions back the way they were (turns out this particular subkey had been modified by mistake anyway). You’ll either need to be a member of the local Administartors group to run this, or schedule it to run under Task Scheduler with admin credentials. You’ll also need the SubInAcl.exe command-line utility.

subinacl /subkeyreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
  /grant=Administrators=F
  /grant=System=F
  /grant=everyone=R

Now Windows will be able to properly enumerate devices and the problem should go away.

Get SubInAcl.exe from Microsoft.

I just wanted to say that following SpeedStep's direction will fix this problem.  If you have the Optiplex GX260, follow the directions to a T and it will work.

These are the steps I did to get my GX260's sound (and video) to work properly.

A) I downloaded SP2, full install from the Microsoft and copied it to another HD that I have connected to the GX260 via USB (external HD basically).  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

B) Downloaded the Audio Driver to the external HD.  ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R56339.EXE

C) Downloaded the Video Driver to the external HD.  http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=426274    *If this link does not work, go to http://www.driversguide.com/ click on the members link in the center of the page (#3), enter drivers for the membername, all for the password then click the login button.  On the next page, scroll down until you see:

If you don't want to create your new account, click here to continue on to the site.

Click on click here and continue.

Select Graphics & Video Adapter , then on the next page, select the letter D and find Dell Computer.  Select it and click Select Company>>> button.

On the next page, scroll down until you see:

1.   Dell Optiplex GX270 May 24, 2005

Select that link and scroll down until you find:

Video_Optplex.zip  (Driver)

D) Shutdown the PC, disconnect the external HD and placed the XP Pro disc in the GX260 drive to start the install.

Now for the install

1) On a unformatted HD, install Windows XP

2) After installation completes, use your ADMINISTRATOR password to log on into XP.

3) You'll just see a recycle bin in the lower right corner of the desktop.  Reboot #1.

4) Log in using ADMINISTRATOR, see the recycle bin, Reboot #2

5) Repeat step 4 - Reboot #3

6) Your video will be messed up at 640 x 480 16 colors, but don't worry, I have a solution for that below.

7) Access your external drive or wherever the SP2 file is located.

8) Install SP2 (takes about 10 to 15 minutes).  After install REBOOT 3 TIMES, and use the administrator account to log in each time.

9) After logging in, access the external drive again, and install the audio driver ( R56339.EXE)

10) Reboot - As it's shutting down, you'll now notice you have SOUND!!!!  Whoohoo!!!  :smileyvery-happy:

11) Log in, locate the video driver ( Video_Optplex.zip) and install that.  Reboot.  Your video is now set at 1024 x 768, true color.

Your Dell GX260 is now good to go!  You're all set.

Remember, reboot 3 times after a FRESH install of XP, and then install Service Pack 2 and reboot 3 times.  Install the audio driver next, reboot, then install the video driver.

Hmmmm I remember coming across and issue like this a long time ago, I think while I was completing my information systems degree. If I recall correctly, we had to wipe the hard drive completely and reboot windows before if ever started working again.
