Optiplex 745 USFF RAM capacity
I've been hearing via semi-trusted sources that the Dell BIOS team has been beefing up allowable RAM capacity (in Latitude D Series) and I was wondering if perhaps the Opti 745 USFF might be getting a bump in RAM capacity via a BIOS update.
The non-ultra-small-form-factor Opti 745s have always supported 8G on four DIMMs but the USFF has only two DIMM slots so the published RAM capacity for the 745 USFF is 4G. I have 4G now, but I'd consider going to 8G on two DIMMs (Yes, I'm running Vista 64-bit) if someone might comment on whether the BIOS would support 2x4G DIMMs. Or, perhaps they've always supported 8G but no 4G DIMMs were available when the computer was released. I just don't have RAM sitting around test these things.

Don't hold your breath on a BIOS update for a couple of reasons.
1) The board limitations themselves. The USFF chassis not built to be a high end heavy RAM system, thus only two slots
2) The system itself rolled live back in 2006. Dell is moving to a new line of systems (160, 360, 960, F! 160) which are shipping now, so the R&D will be for those.
I can't think of a reason you could not slot to 4GB sticks using a 64 bit OS, so give a shot and report back. Worst that happens is the system fails to POST and you revert back the RAM.

If I had a couple of 4G sticks just lying around my office I'd try it but I don't feel comfortable purchasing them without knowing if they'll work or not. I'm going to guess it won't work because of board limitations. Thanks for the insight and for taking the time to respond.

:emotion-1:2 4gig modules...hummmm first they can't be 800mhz modules as the 745 manual clearly states that there not compatible.That leaves pc2-5300 modules,not sure if they make 4 gig modules,but my guess is that they would not work....kinda like putting a corvette engine into a pinto...

Is there a scanner that gives this detailed info including RAM data w manuf & speed ?
Or can i get this data from my machine (Windows 8Pro) ?
