The Optiplex 760 MT was built with two different motherboards.

T674K motherboard does not support Core 2 Quad CPUs, only Core 2 Duo CPUs.
 
U562N motherboards support both Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Which version is installed in the your Optiplex 760 MT?

If the computer was shipped with a Core 2 Duo CPU, then the motherboard is usually the T674K version.

The following CPUs are supported by the T674K version:

E7400, 2.8GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
E7500, 2.93GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
Wolfdale Dual Core E7600, 3.06GHz, 3MB, 65W, R0, (With VT)
Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
Wolfdale Processor E8600, 3.33GHz

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have the latest BIOS version installed.

I cant see the number on the board anywere. This is what a system test reports

Q9550

Q9650

Q9400

Q8300

Q8200

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have the latest BIOS version installed.

Hi,

Just to confirm, are we saying that only one of the 2 used motherboards support our E5200 chip? and that motherboard is the one that supports Core2Quad?

I was stupid and bought a Q9400 yesterday because on the intel site it says the q43/q45 supports the core2quad and evidence on dell said similar.

I would be devastated if the chip didnt work :(

It is not the chipset, it is the number of voltage regulator IC's the motherboard has.  The T674K is the cheap motherboard version and has less voltage regulator IC's.

would be interested in what you've done mate, sounds like youve got at SFF and trying to do the same as me. except, i need hardware virtualisation support.

See this is the confusion, using CPU-Z, as the lad above says; we have the motherboard "0M858N". I've checked the inside of the computer and there is nothing which tells you whether its any of the motherboards you mention.

Googling that number brings you a part number, with no specs and dell site too does not even register it in any search too.

Another confusion is, its the SFF that I have not the mini tower. So the incoming power is a lot less than the mini tower @235watts compared to the 305.

The discussion in this thread is about the Mini Tower version, not the SFF.

The 0M858N motherboard should support Core 2 Quad CPU's, but the OptiPlex 760 SFF probably will not support quads, as the 235w power supply is too small and cannot be upgraded, as it's a Dell proprietary unit, due to it's shape and size.

oh man. I was hoping this wasn't the case. i can only try it and report back my findings. Just bought a Q9400 for it and was hoping to run a virtualized sharepoint farm off it for development :(

I dont think there is a thread for the Optiplex 760 SFF is there? Google brings back this page if you search for optiplex 760 quad core upgrade.

If you want to upgrade, a SFF system is the wrong one to buy, you need to purchase at the minimum, a Mini Tower computer.

Personally, as you have already purchased the Q9400, I would install it and see if the system boots correctly and runs without overheating.

Before installing the processor, remember to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, because with version A11 Updated Intel Processor's microcode was added.

Guys, I bought Optiplex 760 SFF with Pentium something E5200 processor a white ago.

I wanted to have a cheap machine for Excel calculations. I've found out that performance of q9x50 is very similar in Excel to i7 920 or other budget processors so instead of changing  PC I decided to go with the upgrade.

My current config is as follows:

INTEL Q9550, 8 GB RAM, SSD 120 GB, HDD 500 GB connected internally through external eSata, DVD RW (it will be BR RE soon), Asus Xonar (dont remember the model - but with optical audio out), Win 7 64 bit.

Computer works like charm.
