Optiplex GX520 Ram upgrade.

Hi i have recently bought a dell optiplex gx520 and it's great machine, i'm having a problem upgrading my ram though. The PC came with 1.5 gb of ram, and i'm trying to swap the 512 mb to 1gb giving me 2 gb of ram. the extra 1gb ram was sent to me by the guy i bought the PC from because it was supposed to have 2gb in it already but it only had 1.5. The problem is when i put the new 1 gb module in and then switch on the PC it just makes a loud beeping moise for a few seconds and then doesn't switch on. I've upgraded to the latest BIOS which was recommended to me buy the guy who sent me the ram. Am i doing somkething wrong? This is the first time i've installed new ram and i'm not sure if i'm doing anything wrong, i switched off the PC and took out the old module then clicked the new one into place.

This is what i have now:

  [ Memory Devices / DIMM_1 ]

    Memory Device Properties:
      Form Factor                                       DIMM
      Type Detail                                       Synchronous
      Size                                              512 MB
      Speed                                             400 MHz
      Total Width                                       64-bit
      Data Width                                        64-bit
      Device Locator                                    DIMM_1
      Manufacturer                                      CE00000000000000
      Serial Number                                     46053A43
      Part Number                                       M3 78T6553CZ0-CD5

  [ Memory Devices / DIMM_2 ]

    Memory Device Properties:
      Form Factor                                       DIMM
      Type Detail                                       Synchronous
      Size                                              1024 MB
      Speed                                             400 MHz
      Total Width                                       64-bit
      Data Width                                        64-bit
      Device Locator                                    DIMM_2
      Manufacturer                                      7F98000000000000
      Serial Number                                     B21A23C9
      Part Number                                       K

And the new 1GB module i have been sent is described as:

dell 1gb HYNIX 1Rx8 PC2-5300U-555-12 RAM MEMORY WK007.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.:emotion-11:

Try using only the original 1.5gb RAM, does the GX520 start without any errors?

If it does, then the new 1gb module could be not compatible with the GX520.

Hi the original 1.5 gb works absolutely fine, the guy who sent me the ram assures me it is compatible the info on the sticker on the module says:

1GB 1Rx8 PC2-5300U-555-12-ZZ

Made in China M378T2863DZS-CE6  0746

Does anyone know if this is compatble with my optilex gx520 or not? because the guy tells me it is and if it's not then he still owes me some ram. Thanks for helping me on this.

Then it would appear that the 'new' 1gb module is not compatible.

There are basically four reasons, why memory does not work (1) RAM not compatible to the computer (2) Faulty RAM (3) Bad memory slot [rare] (4) RAM not installed correctly.

Thanks Bev, is there any way to find out if it is a compatability problem?

Hello doobeez, Can you remove all the original memory and install just the module you got from your friend and see if the system will boot?

If so, it would suggest this memory module is not compatible with the original memory.

If the system will not boot with the friend's memory, either it is defective or not compatible with your system.

Hope this helps.

Hi i tried taking the original ram out and just putting the new module in, and it still didn't work i got the same beeping noise, i tried the new module in bothe slots, so i assume it's that the ram is not compatible with my coputer at all right?

I've checked the event log and i have this : "post error memory size different"

Yes, the memory is NOT compatible with your computer, now you need to convince the vendor you purchased the computer from.
