Pentium D vs Pentium 4
Hello all
(Bumped 20/5-2011: The specific CPU in this thread is not the question anymore, the main question is if a 3,0GHz Pentium D is faster than a 3,0 Pentium 4)
I've asked before, and have monitored the local eBay and other places where people can sell used CPUs.
Now I've found a Pentium D 830 3.0GHz 800MHz 2x1MB for $23,50.
Is this a worthy replacement for my Pentium 4 3GHz, 2MB? Or should I contiunue monitoring the pages for a faster one?
Thanks for any answer!
Oh, and this is supposed to be a cheap way to upgrade my ancient computer ;)
Thanks again!

Is a >3,0GHz Pentium D noticeably faster than a 3,0GHz Pentium 4? :)
Otherwisely, thanks for a great and helpful forum :)
Only if the software supports SMP. Otherwise it makes little to no difference.

Oh, sorry, meant to link an older thread with the specs, but got carried away :)
Here are specs for my computer!

That price is about right, considering the "D" CPU's "old technology".
Can't say if it will work in your PC. You failed to note your PC model number.

Looking at the other thread it sums up what you can or can't use. I dont' think the lowly D830 will speed up processing.

Hm, then, will any Pentium D speed anything up? 3.2GHz? 3.4, 3.6?
And how important is the cache-memory, some have 1MB, some 2, and some 4MB?
Also, in this thread, JMICHAEL linked to this page that compares CPUs, and the Pentium D 3.0 GHz have twice as many points (no idea how they calculate points) as my Pentium 4, is this info of any value? :)
Thanks

Don't be fooled by the Mhz Myth.
Faster Netburst Processors are not giving faster performance.
The Netburst Design is flawed. The extended pipeline and buggy prefetch unit are not overcome by
Making the clock speed faster and faster. 3.8 Ghz does not help.
Thats why the Core Based CPU's are like the Coppermine Pentium3 cpus.
Pipelines and cache etc are all quite different.
Friend of mine wanted to play WOW faster and got a Pentium D for his Optiplex 620.
Added More Ram. The result was completely underwhelming.
The Good news is that the DDR2 800Mhz PC 6400 Ram he purchased works fine in an Optiplex 745.
He updated the system by Buying a Refirb Optiplex 745 with 1.86 Ghz Core2 Duo Cpu
and moved his Geforce 9800 GT single slot card to the new machine.
Result was wow running at full 60fps at 1280 x 1024 and video settings set to high.
My general Tests Seem to indicate that the Core2 Duo 1.86 Ghz is 5 times faster than the 3.0 Ghz
Penitum D that he tried to upgrade with.

Wow, this is bumping an old thread, but a friend of mine reminded me of this.
As you might understand this isn't my "prio-1" goal, but it's somewhere on the list :)
Anyway:
Now, after reading this answer again maybe a fourth time, I finally understand what you mean.
You mean that the Core2Duo-processors are faster than Pentium D? If so then it doesn't really matter in my case as Pentium D is the latest kind of processors that my motherboard does support :S
Well, I'll continue going through my old threads about this to get myself updated with what worked and what not.
Just for the thread, the question stands:
Is a >3,0GHz Pentium D noticeably faster than a 3,0GHz Pentium 4? :)
Otherwisely, thanks for a great and helpful forum :)
