Processor upgrade optiplex 760 sff

I would like to upgrade the processor on a optiplex 760 sff. The current processor is a E5200. Can you advise which processor can be used without the need to change the processor or system board. The service tag is Service tag removed per privacy policy>. Thanks in advance.

Will I need to replace the system board iif I use an e8600 processor?

Most likely no, I am highly suspicious that 760 sff and 760 MT have the same motherboard and if so here information for Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Just take a look here.

The Optiplex 760 MT was built with two different motherboards.

T674K motherboard does not support Core 2 Quad CPUs, only Core 2 Duo CPUs.

U562N motherboards support both Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Which version is installed in the your Optiplex 760 MT?

If the computer was shipped with a Core 2 Duo CPU, then the motherboard is usually the T674K version.

The following CPUs are supported by the T674K version:

E7400, 2.8GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
E7500, 2.93GHz, 3MB, WFD, R0, (With VT)
Wolfdale Dual Core E7600, 3.06GHz, 3MB, 65W, R0, (With VT)
Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
Wolfdale Dual Core E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 65W, E0, 1333FSB
Wolfdale Processor E8600, 3.33GHz

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have the latest BIOS version installed.

Bev

I hope it helps

Hi cgonzalezuk,

Thank you for your reply. You do not have to replace the motherboard. Please make sure that you have the updated BIOS as informed by kisianik.

so all you need to do is replace the CPU and everything will work? the PSU in the SFF is just a 235w one. I will report back here to confirm whether a Q9400 has worked on the SFF.

Hi, Yes please; I need further assistance!

I am getting a Q9650.

I have the SFF Optiplex 760 and would like to have confirmed that the 235W PSU as supplied therein is designed to take this quad core processor ?

Will it also be able to take update Graphics engine after?

Hi all,

confused.com!

The Dell Optiplex 760 generic service manual clearly states the SFF Optiplex 760 does support Core 2 Quad up to 3GHz.

The USFF does apparently not. Fair enough.

Now I was suspicious with the 235W PSU even being able to handle it knowing full well in most custom build desktops you'd err toward a 400W or thereabouts.

Can anyone please clarify why it is stated the SFF can support core 2 Quad with this power supply?

- Has anyone successfully run a Core 2 Quad QX9650 in a SFF case?

Very best regards,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Dell Optplex 760 has been tested with the following processors:

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go  ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

The 235W power supply shall support this processor.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Saharsh,

Dell 760 "SFF" - Upgraded bios to A15, installed Qx9650 CPU and all I got was "unsupported processor detected". Replaced with my original Core 2 DUO - no problems machine started up again. Any ideas?

Hi Simon,

Dell has tested Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9650 (12M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) processor with this system. There could be various factor causing this issue. You can check the comparison of the Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9650  and Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9650 from the link http://intel.ly/11JvJow.

There is difference in the Max TDP (Thermal Design Power) of both the processors. TDP means the maximum amount of power the cooling system needs to dissipate in order to keep the chip at or below its maximum temperature. Also, there are other differences too. You may try the one tested by Dell and that shall work.

Hope this helps.

AWESOME.

I just installed an Q9400 on my Dell SFF 760, and it works a treat. There did seem to be a bit of a lag on first install, but then it flies.

So go ahead if you want to put that in. I havent pushed it yet, but I've got the HDD, CPU, Fans, DVD and a decent HDMI graphics card running at the same time.

Hi Saharsh

- Thank you so much for your valued time, whatever they pay you it's not enough! -

Finally got hold of  "proper" 3GHz Core 2 Quad Q9650 CPU system working now as I type on it!

Can you please advise - do I still have enough supply capacity to upgrade the graphics to a 500mB/1GB PCI-e card?

If so, is there anything I should avoid?

** for those waiting to see; I got the Dell Optiplex 760 SFF working with Intel 3GHz Core2 Quad Q9650, 8GB RAM currently running Ubuntu no problems!! **

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE PROCESSOR MARKED Q'X'9650 - IT DOES NOT WORK!

Best regards to all,

Simon
