Q: Dimension E520 - more detailed CPU support information?

Jump to solution

Hello,

Does anyone know where one can find more detailed information as to which of the more recent CPUs a Dell Dimension E520 can support?

I currently have:

  • Dell Dimension E520 Smiley Happy
  • Latest BIOS (2.4.0)
  • Intel 965 G Express chipset
  • Intel Core 2 Duo 6320 (1.86GHz, 4MB L2 cache) CPU

I have already looked in the manual and specifications for the computer on the Dell Support website and know I can only use something that has a maximum of 1066MHz FSB.  I also have searched the forums and found others who have successfully inserted an Intel Q6600 or Q6700 CPU.

I can't get that CPU now, and so I would like know if I can purchase and successfully install one of the following currently-available CPUs:

  • Core 2 Duo E6600 (the new 45mn CPU at 2.8 GHz)
  • Core 2 Duo E7300, or E7400
  • Any other currently-available (in Canada) dual or quad-core CPUs I can use?

The primary goal of the CPU replacement is to increase the video-rendering performance after editing videos.  Gaming is secondary, but nice if a boost in performance was obtained.  I also wanted to make sure I did not buy a CPU only to find the BIOS / chipset does not support such Smiley Happy

Thanks in advance,
Jack

The fastest CPUs we validated are  -
KU345 Conroe E6600, 2.40G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
PN416 Conroe E6700, 2.66G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2

Hi Chris,

If you will permit me one more naive question: do you know if there is a way I can determine if my BIOS (2.4.0) supports the multiplier necessary to run a 2.8 GHz CPU with 1066 MHz FSB?

I ask because the slowest Core 2 Duo available for sale now in most stores is the new E6300 at 2.8 GHz.  I just wanted to make sure I did not buy a CPU and find it not work (as most stores have a no-return policy for such after opening the box Smiley Happy

Thanks in advance,
Jack

All Conroe- or Kensington-class cpu's in 65nm and with max FSB1066 run on the E520. The Fastest cpu's are E6700 and Q6700. Both are outdated thru the 45nm versions with FSB1333. Dell offered no settings for multi or voltage or fsb. Therefor you system will not start up if the cpu is unknown for the Bios. For Q6700 you need bios version 2.4.0.

Hi

Just searching though about a CPU upgrade. Can you tell me if / intel CPU Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz 1066MHz FSB 3MB is also compatible with the Dell E520?

Thanks for you help

This are the specs for your E7400:
Dual-Core "Wolfdale" • TDP: 65W • Fertigung: 45nm • FSB: 266MHz • L2-Cache: 3MB shared • Stepping: R0 • MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, EIST, Intel 64, XD bit, iAMT2, TXT, Enhanced Halt State (C1E), Extended Stop Grant State (C2E), Deep Sleep State (C3E), Deeper Sleep State (C4E), Thermal Monitor 2
The bold writings give the solution. Wolfdale is newer than Conroe/Kensington and 45nm inside E520 is generally not supported.

Hi, I'm just wondering what you ended up doing because I am in the same situation and am not sure if the E6300 will work?

thanks

Hi Tim888

I believe it should work, as my CPU is a 6320 - which is basically the same as the 6300 you are referring to (1.86GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 65W)...with the exception of the L2 cache - yours would have 2MB, while mine has 4MB.  In fact, I think at the time i purchased the computer, I paid an extra $20 to get the 6320 instead of the 6300...so if my memory serves me correctly, Dell was selling the Dimension E520 at one point with the 6300 CPU...

I hope that helps!

Tim888's cpu will work, if it is a Core2Duo E6300 in 65nm-technology (conroe-class, FSB1066, 65W TDP) and this type of cpu was declared End-o-Life by Intel in 2008. If he bought a Pentium E6300 then he have no luck. A Pentium E6300 is a CPU in 45nm-technology with a multiplicator of 10.5 and 2.8GHz. Further informations you can find on the Intel webpage
