Trying To Upgrade My Dell 9150 Machine (need help)
Hi my name is Dave, and I am trying to squeeze some more life out of my Dell 9150 that I bought in 2006.
Ok. I will tell you about my current set up before I start asking questions.
I have :
Windows XP Media Center (SP3 + all updates)
Motherboard - Dell 0FJ030 (BIOS - A05 date: 05/30/2006)
Processor - Pentium D 940 @ 3.2ghz
Memory RAM - 4 Gb DDR2 @ 266.0 MHz (no name brand? It's all black)
Video Card - BFG Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT Eco Intelligence Edition
PSU - Dell PSU @ ???. It was able to run my old BFG 8800 GT Over Clocked edition just fine. So I'm guessing it's between 450watts and 500?)
HDD - Western Digital Caviar 320gb @ 7,200 RPM
Sound Card - Soundblaster Xifi

I had asked for a new CPU for x-mas and it has already been ordered for me. What I am getting is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core.
I am also planning on getting a Nvidia Geforce 460 GTX to update my video card. I am also ordering a new power which is a Corsair 650 watt 12v PSU.
Is there any compatability issues with these two products I have already ordered?

I was also wondering if these parts that I am buying in the near future to upgrade my old PC would conflict with my motherboard or any other parts? I tried to use google, but not much results turn up.
so here is my upgrade list that I may purchase , and I would appreciate any helpful input.
1. G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1200 (PC2 9600) Dual Channel Kit
2. (x 2 in RAID0) Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
3. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

The Dimension 9150 supports Pentium 4 or Pentium D processors only and does not support any Core 2 Duo or Quad core processors.

Oh no, so it doesn't matter if the socket matches (LGA 775)?

Because the 9150 has a Socket LGA 775, does not mean that all LGA 775 processors are compatible, the motherboard is the problem.
The Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors require a different voltage regulator design than what's on the XPS400/Dimension 9150 motherboard.
The fastest processor supported for the XPS400/9150 is the Pentium D 960, which not much of an upgrade and may be not worth cost involved.

Ouch. Too bad about the CPU, but it is correct that it will not support it. That is a lot of expense to put into an older system. It will also not support the memory you listed. I am pretty sure the max is 1GB per slot and the 6400 speed. If you really add up all the upgrades you want to do, you could buy a new system for that cost.

Yeah, I was filled with rage last night haha. Frantically looking around trying to seeing if there was some sort of work around. Well thank you guys for letting me know that my Dell 9150 has pretty much reached its last year. I must say that my Dell 9150 brought me a lot of memorable gaming experiences with my friends. It's too bad it was built together so oddly, it could have been my baby another couple years lol.
Now, this is what I want to try. (god I hope this set up doesn't give me as much trouble as my Dell lol).

Again, thanks for the info shared. now I won't have to take the CPU out of the box, I can hopefully return it and get the money back or ask to put the money towards something else.

It looks like a nice configuration.
Last year, instead of buying a new desktop from a OEM assembler eg. Dell, etc, I built my own Windows 7 system. :emotion-5:
