Upgrade in motherboard Dimension 5150/E510

I wonder if you have a new motherboard where I can upgrade a Dimension 5150/E510? Dell declined to.

You could install a Dimension e520 motherboard, that would be compatible with the e510/5150 BTX case.

Maybe not another Dell, because that motherboards are very hard to find.

There are no third party BTX motherboards available that would fit into Dell's e510 BTX case, plus when a non-Dell motherboard is used a new OEM, or retail copy of windows is required, as Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS and cannot be activated.

I really would not use Windows, I just wanted a motherboard that was easy to find and that could put the office of Dell. A motherboard I've seen is the GATEWAY 4006153R  http://support.gateway.com/s / MOTHERBD/Intel2/4006153R/4006153Rsp2.shtml or Intel DG965MQnão know if it pays off and is easy to find here in Brazil.

I have an E510. 

As Bev has mentioned, ONLY another Dell BTX motherboard will fit and work.  If you use an E520 motherboard then you will have to change the optical drives from the current PATA to SATA as the E520 does not support PATA. 

In addition, Dell uses a proprietary and undocumented front panel connection and ONLY another E510 motherboard will properly pin out with the E510's front panel connection as Dell's proprietary connector is not wired the same in all models. There is no guarantee that a different Dell board such as an E520 board is 100% compatible with the E510's front panel wiring.  Most of the Gateway's I've seen use standard ATX type front panel interface connections (even in their BTX case models).

If you want to use a different motherboard, you will also have to buy a new case/power supply/CPU and CPU heatsink assembly and a Retail copy of Windows and maybe new memory as the speed of the existing will probably be slower than then new CPU's bus speed.  The case and power supply is not a major expense when upgrading and that will allow you to use whatever ATX motherboard you want.

The motherboard may be a BTX.  How are you going to connect it to the Dell proprietary and undocumented front panel connector?  The Dell connector is not the same as what Gateway, Intel, HP, Acer, etc use. 

Another issue is a non-Dell BTX motherboard may not physically fit without mechanical modifications to the case as many Dell motherboards are also a custom physical size. And finally Dell uses custom motherboard mounting hold locations on many of their boards.

Obviously our recommendations that it won't work do not matter.

Perhaps not listening.  :)   Would an E521 motherboard work in a 5150 case?  I know it takes an AMD processor but they are cheap.

By the way, thanks Bev.  I've been reading your helpful and patient remarks for a long time on these forums.

FWIW, the grouping of USB ports and sound jacks is different for the e520 and the 5150.  And both of those are different from the e521. I'm looking at all three as I type this.  Looks to me like the inner foam pad between the board and the case is sewn with wire so it is meant to function as a ground for the components so I wouldn't just pitch it.  The main problem is that these don't use detachable backplates but a solid steel frame with holes milled for the particular boards.

Yes, it should, but the e521 does not support any IDE drives, only SATA drives.
