Upgrade the processor of my Dell Dimension 3100

I'm thinking of upgrading the processor of my Dell Dimension 3100. The current CPU is Intel Pentium 4 640, socket type is LGA 775. The mainboard is model 0JC474 from Dell.

I'm planning to upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 model (full spec is here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116419).

My question is: Will this CPU work with my motherboard?

No, the Dimension 3100/E310 motherboard, does not support either Dual Core or Core 2 Duo processors.

A Socket LGA 775 Prescott P4 3.4gb, 800fsb is the maximum size processor, supported by the e310.

Cedar Mill processors are not supported by the Dimension 3100/e310,

Prescott and Celeron-D processors are.

These are the highest supported processors:-

Prescott P4 650, 3.40Ghz
Prescott P4 551, 3.40Ghz
Prescott P4 551, 3.40Ghz

Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS Version A04, is installed, when support for new CPU's was added.

How about a P4 651 Cedar Mill 3.4 Ghz?  The 800Mhz FSB should match up.

No, the Dimension 3100/e310 has a Dell proprietary heatsink assembly and a BTX motherboard,  basically all you can do, is keep the heatsink's cooling fins, front panel air intakes and inside of the case, clean of any dust buildup.

Also, the 3100 chassis is, as noted, BTX and there are no retail BTX motherboards available that would fit into the 3100.

Thanks, just wishful thinking, I guess.  I'm trying to find something to run a little cooler.  Do you think an aftermarket cpu cooler help, or even fit.  I'm beginning to think another motherboard might be beetter yet.

Thanks for the insight.  I'guess I'll turn my attention to my XPS410.  At least it's starting with a core2-Duo.  I'll check to see if someones alaready asked about that one.  I think that if it'll run a wolfdale processor, that I can upgrade the power supply, O.S. and video card to end up with something a little more current.

The maximum Core 2 Duo processor, supported by the dimension XPS 410 is either the E6700, or XE X6800 and maximum Core 2 Quad supported is a Q6700.

You can find more info,HERE

Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, 2.5.3, because with version 2.5.1, new CPU Support was added.

Thanks, Bev.  I found your post of that list from last April on a 410 thread.  I'll have to build up my fundage a little after Christmas here, but it now looks like I can tune up my 'puter to last me a few more years!  We've got 5 desktops and three laptops in the house from Dell.  Some are sure easier to upgrade than others, aren't they!  My next project will be to upgrade an old Inspiron 530 (Celeron)for HTPC duty.

Josh.

Every upgrade is different and often present their own challenges. :emotion-5:

I upgraded my Inspiron 530 MT with a Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, without any issues last year.

Hi,

I try to upgrade my Dell 3100 with a Pentium 4 670 but the post screen comes up with CPU not supported, BIOS is v04. From my search 3100 supports upto Pentium 640. This post is the only place it states support for Pentim 4 650, is this from experience or where is your source. Many Thanks.

Dell Dimension 3100. I have one of these computers which was fitted with a 3.07 GHz Celeron processor and 1mb of memory. I had already installed Windows 7 Professional without a problem which greatly improved the start-up time and operation compared to Windows XP. I wanted to see if I could further improve the performance of the computer. First I upgraded the RAM at a cost of £8.00 which naturally gave an improvement. I upgraded the BIOS from A03 to A04 which went very smoothly. Next I changed the processor to an Intel SL7Z7 Pentium 4 650 3.4GHz 800MHz 2MB Socket 775 Processor at a cost of £10.00. The BIOS immediately recognised this. I enabled hyper threading from the BIOS set-up menu. This gave a further improvement. Earlier I had replaced the power supply with a 600W unit. Finally I fitted a recently introduced Club Radeon HD 6450 PCI Express X1which enabled me to use either a VGA, DVI or HDMI monitor. The Windows Experience Index increased from a basic 1.0 to a healthier 4.2. This was the most expensive item costing me £40. For £58 I have transformed the computer. I hope others find this of interest/use.
