Upgrading The Graphics Card For A Dell Dimension E520

Hey,

I've had my Dell Dimension E520 for 3ish years and i need to upgrade my graphics card. I've spent a long while surfing around the internet and it seems that people recommend the GeForce 9500GT and the RadeonHD 4670. Unfortunately i struggle to understand computer hardware and people are talking about watts and PSUs which confuses me.

These are what i believe to be my system specs, as the only things that i've upgraded on my standard E520 is the RAM (1GB to 3GB) and HDD (160GB to 320GB). I used CUP-Z to find out this information. You can see the full report here.

Processor = Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 2CPU @ 1.86GHz

Motherboard = Dell 0WG864

Memory = DDR2 3GB

Graphics = X1300/X1550 Series PCI-E x16 ver 1.0

Can someone give me a dummies answer to what graphics cards will give me a noticable increase in performance without having to change anything else to do with the computer (Just plug in and play, i hope). Possibly with prices and a general rating?

Sorry if im being too demanding, im just really unsure about all this and don't want to waste my money on something that's not compatible.

Thanks for looking.

Will Herbert.

PS: This is the E520 documentation. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime520/en/SM_EN/specs.htm#wp1052310

Single Slot Radeon HD 6570 or 6670 cards.

Power DC power supply:

Wattage 305 W

Maximum heat dissipation

I have used both. They work FINE with stock 305W power supply.

Hi, I have a Dell E520 which has been extensively upgraded for gaming: Core2 Quad Extreme QX6800 CPU, 8Gb PC6400 RAM, 650w PSU and an Afox Radeon HD7850 (AF7850-2048D5S1) single slot graphics card. OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I believe the motherboard is now maxed out; it can't take any more powerful hardware. The results are awesome. This rig will play the latest CoD games at full res on a 24" monitor. I believe the Afox is the most powerful single slot graphics card currently available. It is very thin and fits into the E520 perfectly with room to spare.

I think Neil's HD7850 is probably the best card you can get in this machine. Unfortunately, for me, it's a little too expensive! I've just upgraded my NVidia GeForce GT440 to a Gainward GTX 650 1GB DDR5 Golden Sample. It returns a Windows Experience index of 7.4, which I think is great. It slots straight in with room to spare. However, as with the HD7850, it will need supplementary power. I can recommend the OCZ modXstream PRO 600w PSU. It's modular and fits straight into the E520 chassis.

I have an Nvidia GT430 in another machine and it is also a good card, although not quite up to the HD7850. I guess the lesson from this thread is that you can upgrade the E520 quite significantly subject to your budget. I would point out that all of the components required for my upgrade were purchased online; either 2nd hand or new from online discount sellers. Either way, it has still been cheaper than a new gaming computer.

If anyone is still looking for a good graphics card for the E520, I have recently installed an ASUS GTX 750. ENGTX750-PHOC-1GD5 in my wife's E520 and it is excellent. You can read about it here http://www.asus.com/au/Graphics_Cards/GTX750PHOC1GD5/ It requires a little bit of work to cut some tiny v-shaped notches in rear edge of the Dell heat sink shroud so that the two little peaks on the Asus heat sink shroud that protrude beyond the length of the graphics card's pcb board (see pic on the Asus website) do not touch the Dell shroud. 5 minutes with a hack saw blade is all that is required and the card then fits perfectly. This card does not require any additional power (runs fine on the stock Dell 305w PSU), is deathly quiet (much quieter than my Afox HD7850) and delivers excellent graphics performance. It is also quite inexpensive at $AUD133 - less than half the price of my Afox. Highly recommended.

hey man go to crucial.com there u can scan your pc it tells you what type of card slot it needs. i own a dimension e520 the one with the big white case with grey in front. mine requires a pci-express 15 pin connector .

trust me it works also after it scans your computer it tells you that in that same page you can buy memory or graphics cards for your pc. and its cheaper than buying it trough dell

I am currently running a spanking new AMD Radeon R5 200 Series 2 GB vid card  in my Dell Dimension E520 and it is stable and works great!

My System:

Dimension E520 W/0WG864 MoBo (Motherboard)

Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 (not overclocked)

4GB PNY DDR2 (PC2 5300 667 MHz) installed and fully recognized no (# Useable) garbage.

I originally had an ATI Radeon HD 5450 512 MB card but this was a joke as HD Videos on Youtube would skip and have error issues. Installation of new R5 200 2GB vid card solved that issue.
