Vostro 410 to Windows 7 (64bit) and 8GB DDR2
Am about to upgrade my Vostro 410 (q9550 quad, 4GB RAM) to Widows 7 and increase the memory to 8GB and fit 3rd SATA drive (1TB).
I understand that I will have to buy a standalone copy of WIN7 64 and I have budgeted likewise.
I also understand that the Dell Vostro 410 does not support over 4GB RAM in it's literature; even though 8GB is supported by the Motherboard and it's BIOS. Likewise Crucial website copies DELL's stance on this. Should I get this http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25664AA800 pair (800mhz) or the 667mhz or the 1025mhz.
Also the 4 retaining screws for the new SATA HD. Is there a speicial length I should get. I understand I will need one new SATA cable, and that there is a spare power supply cable already available inside the case.

Not really worried about it not being supported, as the WIN7 64 will not be either.
Great idea about the screws :emotion-10: lol.
My BIOS is 1.0.3 (20/06/2008) which came with the PC. I do not see any newer version on the drivers page.

With the latest Bios, 8GBs of 800MHz will work, but it is not supported by Dell. I would remove one of the screws to size it.

Did you purchase your vostro 410 with the q9550 or did you upgrade the cpu yourself, and if so, what precautions should I take when upgrading?
Just wondering which cpu's are compatible with that particular system as I'm debating whether or not to upgrade the cpu. According to info on dell's website, it doesn't list specific cpu compatibility (when you look under specifications):

A few questions for you chris:
When you say that "8gb of 800mhz will work, but is not supported by dell", do you mean not recommended?
According to the info provided by dell under system specifications with regard to memory, (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos410/en/sqrg/pdf/X462CA00MR.pdf), it says 4gb maximum. Since there are only 4 slots available, I'm assuming that you could install 4 (2gb each) sticks of ram without issue once the bios has been updated. Can you please provide some clarification regarding the bios?
Also, the latest bios that was released for the vostro 410 was version 1.0.3 on 7-15-2008 correct? The original poster is using the q9550 processor without any issues it seems, but I'd like to know if the faster q9650 would also work. When I checked under specifications for processor type, it only states "core 2 quad processor; fsb up to 1333MHz". Both the q9550 and q9650 have the 1333MHz fsb but the q9550 is a 2.83GHz while the slightly faster q9650 is a 3.0GHz cpu.
Can you please confirm compatibility. Thanks!

I have a Vostro 410 with a The following as reported by the system. I have only been able to get it to recognize 7 GB of ram when running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit, but don't know if it is really utilizing it. If I install 4 - 2gb sticks system wont boot all matching Corsair 2X2GG ddr2 800 Mhz 6400 matching sticks the computer wont boot and beeps twice. If I replace any off the 4 with a 1 MGB stick for a total of 7 the system boots and appears to run fine with Win 7 - 64 Bit Ultimate. Question is am I really using all 7 gb and if so why won't it work with 8. I have downloaded the bios from the site dated 7/15/08 since mine in a month older but the computer says I already have that version installed which appears to be correct ect. for the date. Is there a upgrade to the bios to help out with the transfer to 64 bit? I know the other machines I upgrade (12 Dells only to 32 bit until I figure it out, 1 Samsung R610 Laptop went to 64 needed bios update that was discovered post install that had to be installed prior to the change up, and a Sony that had no issues) that everyone seemed different. Please help with what the max ram is, the best configuration (i.e. 2-2gb sticks if 4 gb limit), fastest speed and maximum amount supported by board, processor, and chipset, and if dual-channel has anything to do with it. I know there are a lot of people asking out on the web without a real definitive answer.

I have a feeling the only reason Dell state a max of 4GB RAM in the Vostros is that they want to make the more expensive XPS desktops look better.

Hello,
Save your money on that standalone copy of Win7.
You can perform an upgrade or 'Clean install' of Windows 7 using a Windows 7 Upgrade disk. It cost much less and is legal as far as Microsoft is concerned. I have added a Windows 7 install page at my WEB SITE that includes full directions on a few ways to install from an upgrade disk.
