I am confused concerning the maximum memory for the Inspiron 580.
On the Dell web site, it states 8 GB is the maximum.
When I run the Dell Support Center software, click the Detailed System Information Tab, under SYSTEM MEMORY, it states Maximum Supported Memory is 16.00 GB.
What is the correct answer?

Depends on 32 or 64 bit OS
I suspect that 4 gig DDR3 dimms are prohibatively expensive.
4GB 240pin DDR3 DIMM 512Mx64 non ECC unbuffered 1.5 volts PC3-8500 DDR3-1066
spec 1066Mhz with SPD CAS 7 latency CL7 max 1.25 inches tall
|Maximum Memory||16GB ???
|Memory Slots||4 (4 banks of 1)|
|non-removable base memory||0MB|
| Machine name: Dell Inspiron 580

- Maximum configurations require a 64-bit operating system.
16 Gigs is for the MINI Tower not the USFF or Desktop.
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 16GB
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 8GB Kit (4GBx2) per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.
How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.
Memory or DRAM is the 'working' memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.
@SALMO60 can you please help me out, would the below RAM work in our Inspirion 580s?
Thanks In Advance
Really sorry for the late reply. The spec of the above memory is the same as the memory I fitted,so this should be ok! (DDR3-1333 PC3 10600 CL9-9-9-24 1.5V ) However,I used memory of a different brand ie G.SKILL (www.gskill.com) .Memory expansion over 4GB only useful for 64 bit operating systems.
