When I finally got to Safe MODE dos prompt the letter i would not appear on screen.
I got two problems.
My Latitude CPX Model # PPX laptop acts like its got a virus. Mouse keeps typing same thing over and over.
When I finally got to a Safe MODE dos prompt, all letters I typed appeared on screen except the letter " i "
Is this a hardware or software problem? What are the solutions?
Please help.

Mice don't type anything... :emotion-43:
Reboot and press F12. Go to the Utilities partition and run the diagnostics for the keyboard, assuming you have the diagnostics on the HDD. Otherwise, they may be on a Dell Resources disk that came with the PC. So you'd have to boot from that CD.
If the letter 'i' fails the diagnostics, it's likely a hardware issue and you'd need to have the keyboard replaced, assuming a replacement keyboard is available...

Given that we're talking about a computer that's on the order of 17 years old, it's likely a worn-out keyboard.

The keyboard is bad which is why they are replaceable.
An external PS2 keyboard or USB keyboard with validate this.
