Win 10 Creators Update on Inspiron 580 MT. Anyone tried this yet?

Hi there,

As yet, the Creators Update did not get pushed to our 580 MT via Windows update. As the 580 MT is not certified by Dell to run Win 10, & also as we have the upgraded RAM, Graphics Card & the Hard Drive from "stock" to keep it more current, I am wondering if this machine will ever get this update automatically.

I know it is possible to update to Creators Update Manually, but of course that contains risks, so I thought I would first of all check if any 580 MT owners had received the automatic update, what their experience was, & also if anyone had done the Manual Update.

Here are the specs of our machine

CPU is an Intel Core i3 Processor 530(2,93GHz,4MB)

8 GB of RAM onboard

Nvidia GT220 Graphics Card

Seagate SSHD 1GB

Looking forward to any replies

There are no updates for Non Supported Legacy hardware.
Windows 10 drivers are NEVER forthcoming for Nvidia GT220 etc. All that means is you have to use the Legacy VISTA or 7 Drivers that Apply to your system.  If you clean install WINDOWS 10 1703 you will have to put back the Legacy Drivers that Apply to your system.

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Software-Support-Legacy-Graphics.aspx

Applicable Operating Systems:

  • Windows® 10 (32 & 64-bit versions)
  • Windows® 8.1 (32 & 64-bit versions)
  • Windows® 7 (32 & 64-bit versions)

Users with AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series and older products looking for driver support, please refer to KB article:  Driver Support for AMD Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000, HD 2000 and Older Series

This does not mean it will stop working or otherwise have problems.

It means that only the Legacy Drivers can be used on the unsupported hardware.

Clean installs as well as well as upgrades still work fine on many machines going back to 2005.  Earlier than that WONT WORK with 8.0 8.1 or windows 10 because they do not support NX(Execute Disable Bit) or LAHF/SAHF  CX16 etc.

Windows 7 came out in 2009 and will be EOL EOS in 2020

There is a link where you can manually push the update.

Thank you for the quick answer. You were talking about a clean install, but we were intending to use the update route from within Microsoft update. I did not have to install any drivers for the GT 220 as Win 10 found them automatically. When I am back at the Inspiron later I will edit this post with the driver details.

The Driver  for the Graphics card is the 342.01 Driver. Yep it is  a Win 7 / 8.0 / 8.1 Driver but the Card runs great on it.

And yes I loved Win 7 but we've found the 580 MT runs better on 10

Still interested on anyone's experiences with the Creators update on this machine

Being that SpeedStep has done this and has 1703 installed (the Creators Update), I would think you should be set, if not.. you can also rollback to the previous version (I believe it is within 10 days, if I recall correctly, and this is as long as some catastrophic doesn’t happen). Being that this wasn't supported by Dell, doesn't mean it won't work (as stated already), but it wasn’t tested and for support (if the system were in normal warranty status etc.), the software will not be supported, and you would need to return to the previous OS for troubleshooting (in some cases).

Another thing to add, is with any major update, you will always want to have any important docs/pictures etc backed up. The other nice thing is doing a reinstall of 10 is not as bad as some older versions used to be, and since yours is activated (since you have been updating etc), you will not need to use a key (not sure if you knew, but just in case).

Best regards,

Brad
