computer maintenance

I am interested in Jesse's question 6/6/01 on scheduled tasks.My problem is, when I try to defrag it starts up but always stops at 10% complete saying the drive has changed and is restarting. This happens over and over and never completes.
Can anyone tell me whats wrong?

It sounds as if you are running 98 or ME. If so, the easiest thing to do is boot to Safe Mode (F8 before the Starting Windows __ screen appears) and run defrag from there. If you wish to remain in the full version, bring up the Close Program window (Con/Alt/Del) and one by one close all open programs. If that does not close your virus program, disable any kind of auto-protect. Then try running defrag.

I am running win 98se. you were right,I had previously ran the defrag but had added a UPS and after I stopped the program the defrag worked.

when u are defraging ur drive you cant be doin anything or it will start over.u have to close all ur programs
