Try reinstalling the default 256mb memory and see if the e510 boots, if it does, then it sounds like 2 x 1gb modules are not compatible.

Re: e510 cant add memory

Try booting with just one of the new 1 gig cards at a time. Can you provide  link to the exact ram you purchased

It's a bummer when that happens, to avoid this I usually go to www.crucial.com , same as many other forum members and use their memory selector, then Crucial certifies their RAM will be compatible.

Re: e510 cant add memory

i was told by the supplier that i would have to update my BIOS. it currently has A02. i have read some bad things about doing this (possibly bricking it). does upgrading my BIOS make sense or would it still be not compatible?

You can try updating the BIOS, but I cannot find a memory fix, or enhancement listed in the e510/5150 BIOS updates.

For more info, go to Dell's Drivers & Downloads section, that's listed at the bottom of this page.

Yes, a failed, or corrupt BIOS flash can briick the motherboard.

The detailed installation instructions are listed on Dell's Dimension e510/5150 downloads page,
