noise level of XPS 8910
just got the dell xps 8910, i7, and I have it with Nvidia 1060 3GB. I am finding the noise level under load quite annoying. I am very close to return it.
you guys have any idea of the "normal" DB noise level of the machine. the website elaborates how it is a "whisper" under load, but come one! everyone in my house can hear the computer when either rendering in Premiere or playing FIFA 17.
is there a BIOS update that controls fans? I think it is powersupply fan that makes the annoying noise and comes on and off. could it be that the 1060 is drawing too much power for the comfort level of the PSU?

I have 1C6CK manufactured by Delta and I have the same issue. Even 20% CPU load, the fan blasts off. I have requested technician visit and let me see how it goes

Technician installed the same PSU and it works fine. However, fans are not kicking on even while booting, shutdown and decent load.

My unbranded noisy PSU was replaced with p/n WC1T4.
Noise level issue resolved.
Thank you.

Dell replaced the PSU J98H5 with PK61K. XPS 8910 ist quiet now.
Edit 17.02.17: PK61K fan is also noisy again playing simplest games
i'm thinking about moving to another case, motherboard, psu with useable 8910 parts

Received my replacement part (WC1T4) today. Seems to be a big improvement so far. Still a bit noisy during prolonged video renders/gaming, but I have a 6700k w/ gtx1080 and I guess that setup will never exactly be silent...
On a side note - I had to remove the cpu heat sink before I could unplug the cpu cable from the psu, so I applied some decent thermal paste when I reattached it and saw a big improvement in CPU temps. Before my cpu went between 80-90°C under load, now it hovers around 68-72C. Worth doing and can only help with fan speeds!

I know this is an older thread, but I've found a solution that has worked for me. My XPS 8910 also had a fan that became very loud during CPU intensive operations (gaming, disk defrag, etc). It only started blowing like crazy when my CPU would hit 100% usage. Through a lot of hit and miss experimenting I found a Windows 10 Power Profile setting that has really helped.
In Control Panel under 'Power Options' I chose my default Dell power plan and picked 'Edit Plan Settings' then chose 'Change Advanced Power Settings'. I then went down to 'Processor Power Management' and changed 'Maximum Processor State' from 100% to 90%. I also set 'System Cooling Policy' to 'Passive'.
This has eliminated the excessively loud power fan. And I've used Open Hardware Monitor to verify that system temps are almost the same as before. It seems the CPU just had to be stopped from hitting 100% to avoid the power fan blowing crazy loud.

Hello,
I have a XPS 8920 with same noisy GJXN1. I contacted Dell tech asked for WC1T4. Dell sent out a technician, but he came with same noisy PSU. I contacted Dell again and asked for WC1T4. Yesterday, I got a package from Dell..... It's another GJXN1! I'm really disappointed with Dell service.

I also have a XPS 8920, with the same PSU GJXN1. Noise is not a problem for me, because the PSU fan never spins. I am trying to contact Dell Technical Support to see what they say. I still have an option to return the unit. Does the PSU fan run on your unit, jd_ahn? I tried to use the test button and stress the CPU. None makes it work.
So many issues with this XPS 8920; First with a bootable SSD 960 Pro, and now the PSU fan.
