upgrade motherboard for Dimension 8100
I have an old Dimenson 8100. Am I right in saying that most modern motherboards will fit in this mid tower case?
How does someone go about finding and choosing a motherboard?
I'm not a gamer but I do some programming and drafting and watch videos online - netflix, crackle.
I want 8 Gig ram.
A PS2 port would be nice for my touchpad.
Any suggestions?

There's just about nothing inside an 8100 that can be used in a newer system - so you're basically going to be building a new system from scratch. You can't re-use the processor, RAM, power supply, video card -- even the hard drives -- so realize you're going to be building a new system from the ground up.

I think the case is proprietary and thus modern mainboards will not fit.
This is coming from someone who's been "hotrodding" Dells for years. (My current rig is an XPS 7100 with an aftermarket mainboard.)

The Dimension 8100 is one of the most highly proprietary Dell systems made, especially the power supply and power connections.
The front, rear, mounting and power supply connectors are all proprietary to the 8100, there are no retail, or Dell motherboards available that will drop into 8100 chassis.
Time to buy a new computer.

You can build it for less than that ... $370 buys a new H77 mainboard, Core i3 2105 CPU with Intel 3000 graphics, Blu-ray combo drive, 8gb DDR3 memory, and 750gb hard drive.
Pick out a case you like, perhaps even a Dell case like the XPS 7100.
