vostro 200 ram upgrade
I am looking to upgrade the ram on my son's system. It is a vostro 200 slim. It currently has only factory stock, but looking to up to max.
My question is, can I run 800mhz ram or does it have to be the 667mhz.
Found a deal on DDR2 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 / 800MHz. Want to make sure no issues before I buy. Looking to get 2 sets. Have already tried optimizers on newegg, etc.
They say nothing about 800, only 667. If cannot use 800, can anyone recommend a good site/deal.

I'm not surprised at the link not working, it is 5.5+ years old.
Try Crucial Here:

Hi, bluekiwi2012,
Yes, you can use the faster RAM. Crucial recommends DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800. They have the 2GB (2x1GB modules) for $54.

Would this work?

I doubt it, the Vostro 200 requires memory with 1.8v, the memory from Frys, is 2.1v
HERE is a list of compatible OCZ memory for the Vostro 200.

Thanks for your help Bev, you have rescued me many times on this site.
I have a question/thought on this subject.
I have recently upgraded my Vostro 200's CPU to the latest and cheapest 3.0 Ghz Celeron Dual Core (about 50.00 GBP) which was possible because of the latest BIOS upgrade (1.0.16 at April 2011).
If I use the faster RAM mentioned by Osprey above (Crucial recommends DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800. They have the 2GB (2x1GB modules) for $54) does anyone know if it is possible to have 8 GB of RAM rather than 4GB RAM with the latest BIOS upgrade and latest processor, or is the limit definitely 4GB?
Thanks

Both Dell and Crucial state the Vostro 200 supports 4gb of DDR2 RAM, see HERE
But, to use 4gb+ of RAM you need 64-bit operating system, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

Prior to installing the processor, you need to check that the BIOS are upgraded to latest version 1.0.16, as support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Sir,
I have a Dell Vostro 200 slim desktop. It is loaded XP; but having used it satisfactorily for past 6/7 years, now the streaming most websites very slow. Is it anything to do with MS suggesting to change the OS to Win 7 or 8? How to resolve this?
2) Is it possible I can use a Sodimm DDR 2, 800-1 gb -200 pins SO Dimm (single or need to use only in pairs?)
Thanks.

I would suggest a installing Win 7.
I'm running Win 7 on an Inspiron 530, that is a clone of the Vostro 200, without any issues
You could perform a clean reinstall of XP, to clean out all the accumulated garbage, that may have collected over the years. but as Microsoft has no longer supported XP with updates since 2014, this would seem to be an exercise in futility.
No, you cannot use Sodimm DDR2 memory, this is not supported by the Vostro 200s, it's primarily for Laptops.
How much DDR2 memory is there already installed in the Vostro 200s?

Installing Windows 7 at this current moment in time is a waste of time because in Late Summer all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers will automatically be updated to Windows 10....
Windows 10 Technical Preview is available here, this system has a Legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so make the USB with the MBR Partition Scheme:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-10-technical-preview-iso/
My advise is therefore to install this and hold out on the Technical Preview until Windows 10 RTM is out.
Windows 10 64 Bit on a SSD Boot Drive such as a Crucial BX100 250 GB will lead to far superior system performance than upgrading the RAM:
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/vostro-200-slim-tower
Windows XP may not install on the SSD.
Note a DDR2 PC2-8500 4 GB kit may also be a good buy for this system.
