what graphic card can i add to a XPS 8300?
Hi guys,
My big son playing Battlefield 3 with his xps 8000 pc but he cant use the highest graphic stteings so i was thinking to upgrade the graphic card.
any suggestion what cards can be added to this system?
System Model: XPS 8300

i heard some where that is not possible to add any graphic cards as it will not be fully used, is this thru?

Since the computer model isn’t specified, I’m providing you with the information for both the models.
For XPS 8300 you can choose from the following list of compatible graphics cards:
1) ATI® Radeon® HD 5450
2) ATI® Radeon® HD 5670
3) ATI® Radeon® HD 5770
4) ATI® Radeon® HD 5870
5) NVIDIA ®GeForce GT420
6) NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 460
For studio XPS 8000 you can choose from the following list of compatible graphics cards:
1) ATI Radeon HD 4350 and ATI Radeon HD 3450
2) ATI Radeon HD 3650
3) ATI Radeon HD 4850
You have to connect the above mentioned card on a PCI express slots.

I've never heard personally that the cards will not be used to their full potential.
We sell 6 cards with the machine as an option:
ATI® Radeon® HD 5450
ATI® Radeon® HD 5670
ATI® Radeon® HD 5770
ATI® Radeon® HD 5870
NVIDIA®GeForce GT420
NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 460
The best card for the system is simply dependent on what the machine is used for. Was the 6700 card purchased with the machine or was it added in afterwards?
Let me know how you get on. As the question relates to a specific game, it would be hard to answer as i have never had any experience with Battlefield myself on the XPS, but Im sure that the system should be powerful enough to handle the game, again down to the memory and power of the graphics card.
But the above cards will operate on the XPS 8300

the system information says: System Model: XPS 8300 as i added in my previous message.
are all these compitable with xps 8300 and are they better that the existing one?

wow thx for that info :) is this the card you mean www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
and it says Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply. will that be ok for us?

You probably have an HD 6770. Forget about the HD 5450, HD 5670, HD 5770 & GT 420. They are all worse than what you have now. Also, forget about the older HD 5870 and the GTX 460 as these two are pretty much off the market now.
If upgrading from the HD 6770, you would want to start looking at either the GTX 560 or the HD 6870. I don't know how much you want to spend though. You are also restricted by your 460 watt power supply, but a lot of newer cards out today are very power efficient and offer high performance with low power consumption. Going beyond the two that I mentioned, a really good card to think about would be the HD 7850.
I have added a chart for comparison, but I do not know the resolution of your monitor. This here shown at 1920 x 1080 on high settings.
You have an i7-2600 CPU so your statement about the graphics card not being fully used is not true.

The one you linked does not seem to show in stock, but these 3 HERE are. The HD 7850 will work fine on your power supply. Note that the least expensive has 1GB of memory and the other two have 2 GBs. I would say the one in the middle is a good buy since the others are overclocked and you can easily do that yourself versus paying extra for it by using Sapphire's Trixx software.
