The value of software-defined storage is being able to deliver cloud-scale storage capabilities in software that can leverage low-cost commodity off the shelf components (COTS). Software-defined means customers have more choices but also more questions:

  • Should I use open source software or a commercial vendor offering?
  • Should I build my own infrastructure with COTS or buy an integrated software/hardware appliance?
  • How do I ensure reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS)?

Join this event to interact with our experts and others to learn the pros and cons of each approach and how to obtain the cost benefits of commodity without sacrificing enterprise-grade manageability, scalability, and service levels.

If you are planning to run analytics on an object platform you have a number of options. EMC ECS Appliance, for example, uses a shared- storage architecture which enables you to use the storage for Object and HDFS (Hadoop). There are even models that incorporate block storage. All of this storage can be seen as a large elastic pool of data that is easily analyzed via Hadoop analytics and applications like Pivotal. The main benefit is that the data can be analyzed in its native form and does not require extract, transform, and load processes.

Good points. Looking more at staff and other resources. How does an organization assess skills and resources when deciding between a vendor-supported platform or building its own in-house?

The best choice is a highly individualized decision based on numerous criteria, but I suggest that any organization faced with this decision begin by asking the following questions:

  • How experienced is IT staff with open-source solutions like OpenStack Swift? What would be the learning curve?
  • How quickly does a solution need to get into production so that app developers can start deploying? Is there a competitive advantage to quick deployment?
  • How would a home grown solution be managed as it scales?
  • Does the desired solution require geo-scaling and high availability?
  • How valuable is automation and management to the object store implementation? Will point solutions from multiple vendors play well together?
  • How mission critical is the deployment? If there is an issue, how quickly would deep
technical expertise need to be available to restore the service?

Hi, how do we enable this feature? I am exploring option to store small files to ECS to improve the performance. Thanks in advance.
