How Analytics Can Help Backup Administrators

Nearly all backup products do two things well: data collection and data reporting. However, they frequently come up short on the third part: data analysis. This Knowledge Sharing article focuses on how analytics can be used on top of backup products such as Avamar and NetWorker. Balaji Panchanathan explains how to perform data analytics for backup products and the benefits that can be derived out of that analysis.

Balaji’s article focuses broadly on:

• How simple functions like min, max, variance can be used to gain valuable insights to backup performance
• The type of predictive analytics that can be done based on the data available in the Avamar server
• How to do predictive analytics

This article describes how backup administrators can use their dormant data more effectively through use of simple tools. Balaji focuses on what type of data to use, tools to fetch meaningful information from those data, and how they can be used daily to help backup administrator’s perform the following activities in a better way.

• Discover why backups are failing and take corrective actions
• Forecast capacity and budgeting
• Report the backup data used by department or by domain

Although this article features Avamar and NetWorker, the frameworks and tools described will be helpful to all types of administrators.
