Can you briefly describe your background, for example, how did you first become interested in IT?

I’ve been interested in computers and electronics for as long as I can remember. After graduating in 2003 from the Information Technology Department  at Zuyd University, Heerlen, The Netherlands, my first job was as an all-round system/network engineer at a small webhosting company.  There I developed my interest in backup, storage and data centers. After joining my current employer, Open Line Consultancy in 2006, I started to specialize in EMC Storage, specifically CLARiiON and VNX,  and EMC Backup products like EMC Networker, and later Avamar and DataDomain. Currently I’m working with a customer at a global company and manufactures chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and metals.  Our team focuses on everything related to data centers (housing), data storage and backup, networking, application provisioning, and server virtualization. Within the team, I’m responsible for managing their EMC Storage, Backup and Archiving systems in Europe. I’m also heavily involved in projects for Data Archiving, Annual Technology Refresh projects, Disaster Recovery, and Data Center relocation and consolidation.

What was your experience with the EMC Proven Professional program like? How did it help you prepare for your career path?

Through the EMC Proven Professional program I’ve been able to learn about new products and technology in a fast, easy to access, place and time independent way. I like the instructor led courses the most, where you have more interaction with your instructor and peers and can discuss topics more in depth.

The program has helped me in gaining highly technical knowledge about the EMC products, I implement, design and use on a day to day base. This has added value to my job as a consultant.

What big project are you working on now? Or what major project have you recently completed?

One of the projects I have recently completed a project to consolidate 2 data centers into a single one. The main focus was to accomplish this without any outage for business critical applications.

At the moment I’m working several projects; one of them is a data archiving project using EMC DiskXtender and Source One Software on an EMC Centera back-end.

What most interests you about your work?

The ever-changing world of technology. I love to work in complex high tech environments, solving challenging problems and designing new solutions to meet customer needs.  Working with such a variety of people, from all walks of life and from so many different places in the world has to be the most interesting part of my current position.  I am always happy to learn more and expand my skills, both technical and social.

Are you active in the Proven Professional Community?

I’m participating in Exam Development Workshops, to help EMC Education Services in creating or reviewing exam questions for EMC Proven Professional Certifications.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about getting certified?

When you are working in the field, customers value when you are certified on the products/ technology you are designing / implementing for them.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

In my spare time I like to travel, listen to trance music and love to go skiing in winter. I also like hanging out with friends and family.
