EqualLogic 6210S drive replacement not working

We ordered part "82FG7" which is a 1.6TB SSD Dell Enterprise Plus drive running firmware E320 to install into a PS6210.  When we install the drive we get the following error:

Level Warning
Time 2/20/2019 3:25:13 PM
Member 6210S
Subsystem SP
Event ID 32.3.28
Message The drive at enclosure 0, drive 18 is not supported on this array. Contact your array support provider and provide the model number (LB1606R ) and serial number (40457136).

Do we have the wrong drive?  Does anyone know the correct part number to order?

Thanks!

Hello,

That does not appear to be an EQL certified drive.  I can't see the screenshot, but based on the error and searching on that part number.  That appears to be a drive for a server or PowerVault array.  Those Dell drives do not work in PS Series SANs.  You also cannot use an OEM drive with EQL arrays.  They are specifically made for EQL by the MFR for Dell.  Even if they are the same part number or firmware.

You need to go back to your vendor if they are claiming this drive is certified for EQL arrays.

 Regards,

Don

Thanks for the response.

The firmware running on the drive is E320.  According to the EqualLogic Drive Firmware Update Utility v13.0, it upgrades those Dell drives from E320 to E339.  I find it strange that the exact firmware mentioned in the EqualLogic drive firmware update tool is what is running on this drive, but it won't work.

#cksum size name newver oldver(comma separated list with no spaces)
1333931757 973824 E339.bin E339 E320,E312,E332,E338

I thought I had done my homework, but not well enough it seems.  Does anyone know the official part number for the 1.6TB SSD drives for EqualLogic?

Hello,

That's because the firmware is not what makes it EQL certified or not.

What EQL array F/W are you running?   That message also shows up on 4K drives are mixed with 512byte drives with older EQL firmware.

Don

We are running 10.0.2.  I updated to the latest current release hoping that it would fix it.

I can't find anything on Dell's site that shows the correct part number.  My internet searches pull up various online stores and eBay items that indicate they are EqualLogic drives, but they all have the same part number as what I have, so I know those can't be right.

Hello,

Then it really does seem like it is not in fact an EQL drive.

  Can you exchange it?

Yes I am returning it.  The question remains, does anyone know where I can find the correct part number?  The vendor is saying that 82FG7 is the correct part number but obviously it doesn't work.

Hello,

It also could be incorrect right from Dell originally when it was received from the OEM.  That has happened.

That part number also shows for Compellent Storage as well.

I called Dell and they couldn't find the part number so I am waiting on a call back. The PS6210 website indicates that the unit supports a 1.6TB SSD under Drive Capacities: "PS6210S: 400GB, 800GB, 1.6TB." https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/povw/equallogic-ps6210-series

I did find out that the drive I have is a read-intense SSD. The 400GB drives (Dell part # X10NT) and the 800GB drives (V6JNY) that work are mixed-use drives. I bet this is the problem!

According to SANDISK (the manufacturer of the 400 and 800GB drives) they did not make a 1.6TB mixed-use drive for that generation. https://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10238/~/lightning-sas-enterprise-ssd-support-information-page

So if there is a 1.6TB drive that's supported, it's not likely manufactured by SANDISK.

Hello,

You problem definitely is not mixed use SSDs.  The Compellent Storage link makes that distinction, the PS Series does not.  Drives go through a qualification process and multiple vendors are sourced for each drive type and size.

That part number also shows for a Compellent array so I'm not sure if that will work in an EQL array.

But it is that special process when the drive is made that is detected by the EQL array firmware.

Don

I received the following response from a Dell Enterprise Infrastructure Specialist:

"Unfortunately, these HDD are End Of Life and we already run out of Refurbished stock as well."

They couldn't give me any more info than that.  :TongueTied:

Hello,

An option is getting it back under contract.  Standard contracts are for up to 7 years from original ship date. The 6210 isn't that old.  Past that there is now an extended hardware only contract to take that to 12 years total.

Otherwise you are looking at other 3rd party maintainers for these drives.

Sorry to necro this, but I feel like it deserves attention.  Compellent drives and Equallogic drives do in fact often share part numbers, but they will NOT work in each others' platforms.  There are different headers programmed onto the drives, so for example if an EQL system sees a compellent header, even though the disks are otherwise identical (including firmware revision) it marks it as unsupported.  Would love an easy fix to this, but I'm afraid there just isn't one.  We stock these drives separately with a -EQL or -CML after the part number to make the distinction, and unfortunately there's no easy way to convert one to the other.  Hope that's useful to someone.  Cheers!
