EqualLogic drive faled. Array has fewer spare drives than expected.
Hi.
We have PS6100 EqualLogic with 24 SSD drives in total (RAID10, 1Pool). One drive is as Spare. Now one disk failed and we see message "Array has fewer spare drives than expected". Does that mean we are not able to use that spare ("Add disk to RAID" is not active)?
Why we can add spare to RAID?
Is any way to replace failed drive by the spare, or it's the only option to buy new disk and replace failed disk?
Thanks

Hello,
For anyone else who's curious, it just means that you've used a spare, and it hasn't been replaced yet with a new spare.

Hi,
I have ps6100 and have raid 5 24 disks with 2 spare. we had a faulty drive and now when i try to replace faulty with purchased drives i get the same message. it only show one spare drive now and 1 faulty.
When i add new drive it shows unavailable and failed. how to resolve this issue? when i add back the faulty drive i have the option to add to array and spare. should i do this first then replace faulty again with new drive?
thanks

Hello,
I suspected RAID50 when you said two spares. Since putting back the old failed drive is seen, the slot is OK. I am also certain that the replacement drive is NOT an EQL drive. The MFR modifies the drive so that it can be qualified as a Dell EQL SAN drive. A standard OEM, or other Dell branded drive will NOT work. I.e. a drive from a different model SAN or server. I would suggest going back to where ever you purchased this drive and get it replaced with a certified EQL drive or a refund.
I would NOT put back the old failed drive. If it failed once it's likely going to fail again. Or fail later with another drive in the same RAIDset and take the array offline. RAID50 is two RAID5 stripes combined into one LUN. Only RAID6 can actually tolerate two failed drives.
