Equallogic PS6100 incorrect space shown

We use an EQL PS6100 array for our VDI environment. The issue is it is taking up a lot of space even after I deleted the VDI's. How do I reclaim this space in the group management?

Hello,

The array on its own is unable to reclaim space.  This is because like all block storage the array is unaware of files or filesystems.   The OS tells the storage WRITE data at LBA X or READ data at LBA X.   Only the OS via an allocation table knows what LBAs are used or free.

There are SCSI commands to tell storage that blocks are free.   The UNMAP LBA X command must come from the OS.    So it is entirely dependent on the OS and filesystem to send these UNMAP commands.

Some OS/Filesystems have software to do this.  E.g.  VMware VMFS has the ESXCLI command that will attempt to reclaim blocks.   Windows W2K12+ uses the defrag program to also send UNMAP commands.

On the EQL side the only caveat is the the volume cannot be using EQL replication. Either SYNC or ASYNC, if so then UNMAP is not supported.  You would have to DISABLE replication, not PAUSE, run UNMAP then start replication over for that volume.

 Regards,

Don
