How to enable secondary controller on Equalogic

I have a freshly installed Equalogic 4000 with two controllers. The primary controller in slot 0 works great. The secondary controller in slot 1 does not appear to be active. How do you initialize the second controller? The current status is "seconadary", with good for battery and good for nvram battery. I plugged in an ethernet cable to port 0 but there is no activity.

Also, does anybody know what write-thru mode for the memory cashe does? There are 2 available policies.

Thanks,

Doug

You don't want to use write-thru unless your backup battery for the cache is dead, otherwise you will degrade performance by waiting on disk/raid  latency for every read/write operation.

The Equallogic design only has 1 active controller at a time. If the active controller were to fail or restart, the other controller becomes the active controller.

At no time will both controllers be active.

To be more specific on the "write-thru" mode, that means that all writes will have to wait until the data gets committed to the disk drives before the ack is sent back to the server.   So the write goes "through" the cache.   Write-back, means the write is ack'd immediately upon hitting cache.   Then the array will cull the writes together and write them to disk more efficiently.
