One drive in the array is not approved

We have an Equallogic PS4100x in production. Few days ago one of the drives failed and we ordered an original Dell HDD for this device. When we replaced the damaged one for the new one, the console says that the drive is not approved.

We checked the documentation and just could find that that happens when there are firmware issues when the drives are not original (not coming from Dell) or are not alike.

The other thing is that when I try to add it to the array, the option "Add to array" is gray out.

Any help would be appreciate it, thanks!

Hello stamac,

I'm sorry but only Dell Equallogic branded drives work in an EQL array.  There is custom firmware on the drive that the array looks for.   There's no workaround for this.

Don

Hi there,

I'm facing same problem. I replaced a HDD MHWN8 Dell 600-GB 6G 10K 2.5 SAS (Equallogic qualified part with FW EN06) for a 0G11X0 Dell EQL 600-GB 10K 2.5 SAS PS4100 one (Equallogic qualified part with FW FN00) and received warning as per below:

WARNING event from storage array Storage01-farm57

subsystem: SP

    event: 28.3.51

     time: Thu Mar 30 18:49:57 2017

Warning health conditions currently exist.

Correct these conditions before they affect array operation.

                More spare drives are expected.

An unauthorized drive has been detected and disabled.

There are 2 outstanding health conditions. Correct these conditions before they affect array operation.

WARNING event from storage array Storage01-farm57

subsystem: SP

    event: 32.3.28

The drive at enclosure 0, drive 17 is not supported on this array. Contact your array support provider and provide the model number (ST9600204SS     ) and serial number (6WN05K9W).

Somebody knows what could be the problem ?

Thank You !!!

Hello,

Is this array still under contract?  If so, open a support case.  I suspect that it's not from your description.  What firmware version are you running?

Don

Hi Don,

No, this array isn't under contract.

FW revision is V7.1.5 (R408054) for all CMs.

Is it supposed to work using different HDD, isn't is ?

Thank You !!!

Hello,

I would ask them to send you a another drive.  Or if they tested it themselves before hand.  The firmware reads specific info on the drive to determine if it's compatible.   It's either there or not.   You could try removing that drive, then restarting the array to switch it to other CM.  Then try the drive again.

Hello,

Are there any other part numbers on it?   That PN comes up as a generic 600G 10K drive.  I checked the supported drives for the 4100 and that part number isn't one of them.

Don

Hello,

Sorry but no, none of those part numbers show being associated with EQL arrays.

Hi Don,

We bought 4 disks from Dell USA to replace 4 failed disk on a PS6110XV.
The disks are dell disks with informations bellow

PN: 9FN066-058
Model Number: ST36500057SS
FW EE06

SAS 15K 600GK

The storage has 4 disks failed and when I put the new disk on array, I get the message "not approved".

There are messages "raid has lost blocks" on array.

How can I put theses disks to work?

Regards.

Ederson
