Hello,

I'm about 99% sure those are not EQL qualified drives based on the symptoms you describe.  Additionally, Dell EMC doesn't sell array drives on arrays that are out-of-warranty.  So I suspect you have  Dell server or other non-EQL drives.  You can either try to get array under contract, which would also allow you to upgrade the array firmware.   6.0.x is years old.    You can also ask them about Dell Extended Maintenance or otherwise try to find a 3rd party maintainer for proper EQL compatible drives.

Regards,

Don

Hello,

There are some 4K hard drives that are qualified for the 4110.  Unless you are referring to EQL volumes, then depending on the EQL firmware you can present a volume to a server that's using 4K vs. 512 byte sector size.

Since the drives have to be Dell/EQL specific the sector size of the drive isn't important.  Since you can't use OEM or other Dell drives in the 4110.  They have to be made specifically for the Dell PS Series SAN.  So a PV drive or Dell server hard drive won't work either.

Okay. thanks for the reply Don. As far as I know these are EQL certified drives. We had to go through Dell spare parts because the array is not under warranty. I've tried two "new" drives from Dell with the same result. You put them in the array and after about 15 seconds the right LED goes amber. Group manager shows the drive as Unavailable. Array firmware is 6.0.7. Just trying to figure out why the drives are not working. The part number of the drive we received from Dell is 61H3H.

You'd think since they took the service tag of the array they could get the correct drives shipped. Guess that asking too much. At any rate thanks for the reply.

Hello,

If it turns out those are the correct drives, it could be that your firmware is too old to support 4K drives.  That firmware is from 2013.  Before 4K drives became common.

That's good to know. But if the rest of the drives in the array are 512 native can they be mixed with 4k drives? I would expect there to be a requirement for the drive architectures to match at that level.

Hello,

Can you send me the MFR and drive part number?   I am seeing that a number of drives need newer firmware than you are running.

The 4K qualified drives I believe use the 512e feature to present themselves as 512b drives but the firmware on the array must support that too.
