PS6100 - Too many spare drives
Hi, we have a PS6100 which was populated with 12 X HDD. This was originally RAID10, and we converted to RAID6. We needed more capacity still and have installed more ST3000NM0023 drives (x6) of them, of which the capacity has dynamically increased. We then couldnt find any more of these model drives, but were able to purchase ST33000650SS drives which are shown as PS supported disks. They have been installed in the SAN, and they are not in an error/unsupported state, but they are all listed as 'Spare' - all 6 of them. The firmware on these is the latest 'RE12' release. Please can anyone help? Thanks.

Hello,
The only supported upgrades are going from 1/2 chassis to a full chassis of drives. Nothing in-between. If the drives are actually PS qualified and same size the model number and firmware wouldn't matter. Check the reported size of the new drives, make sure it is the same or greater than the installed ones.
Best option would be to open a one time support call. For a fee they will help you and see if there's anything that can be done to get the spares into a RAIDset. It might require backing up your data and resetting the array and re-creating it from scratch.

Thank you, yes the drives are the same capacity so this looks to be a quirk. We will get a support call raised in the hope that they can do something. Phil

You are very welcome. Just because I am curious would you run the following command?
Replace MEMBERNAME with the name of the array member. If you are not sure you can run
GrpName>show member
GrpName>member select MEMBERNAME show disks
