PS6610: Unable to create RAID, too many spare drives

Jump to solution

Re-purposing our PS6610, with 41 disks (4TB SAS 7200rpm).  No new drives added and all was working just fine before I re-purposed the unit

I've reset the device (twice), run the setup, updated the firmware on controllers (to v10.0.2) and the disks to v12.

Everything is good to go except for the initial RAID configuration on this member.

Only 7 drives are appearing as online, all the rest are spares, and I am unable to create any RAID.  Whether it's from the Group Manager or the CLI - the response is the same:

"You do not have enough usable drives to configure the requested RAID policy.  You must choose a different RAID policy or add usable drives."

Is there a command or something I can do to force these spares into online mode or is there something else I am missing?

Thanks!

Here's the member disk report:

Hello,

That's because you don't have enough drives.  The only supported configurations are 42 or 84.  There aren't enough drives to create the multiple RAIDsets required.

I didn't realize I needed 42 drives to get this thing started.   So we have some actual spare drives and once I put that one in - it's all working now.  Thanks!

Hello,

You are very welcome!   If you decide to fill it up later, the best option is to power it down.  Add the drives and power back up.  The expansion will start on its own.  Once done the space will become available. There's no way to have a different RAID type with the new drives. it will automatically use the existing RAID policy.
